Why School Should Start Later
Introduction-
Sara mckibben stated to the Start Schools Later Healthy Hours article, that more than 82.2% of U.S. middle, high, and combined public school require students to attend classes at times earlier than recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Children and teens need more sleep, but school starts so early they do not get that sleep. However some people think they should not start later in the day. Schools should start later in the day because children and teens need more sleep and teen car crashes happen more when teens are tired and have to go to school.

Body Paragraph 1- Children and teens need more sleep. For instance, “Middle and high schools should start no earlier than 8:00 am. Doctors say that starting school earlier in the morning prevents children and teens from getting a full night of sleep” (Macmillan 1). This evidence proves that schools should start later because children and teens need more sleep. For example, “In the study drivers ages 17 to 24 who reported sleeping 7 or fewer hours per night were about 20% more likely to be involved in a car crash” (Rettner 1). Based on this evidence we know that schools should start later because it will give more time for teens to sleep and when they have to drive they will be awake. Also, “Drivers who reported getting 7 or fewer hours of sleep per night, 9.4% were involved in a car crash. Compared with 6.9% of those who reported more than 7 hours of sleep per night” (Rettner 1). This concludes that less sleep can cause more car crashes because teens don’t go to sleep until about 10:30 or 11:00 pm, and most of the time they have to get up early in the morning to go to school when they are

For the past few years, the Littleton Public Schools district, along with other school districts around the country, discussed the idea of the change of school start and end times. For the most part of this school year, the district has started to ask parents and students for their opinions and to come up with different solutions that will appeal to everyone. One reason schools should start later is because of the importance of how students could more effortlessly become involved with school. By starting school later, it would allow students to score higher in their core classes because students are able to get more sleep, which results in increased performances (Wahlstrom 10). To further support this, Wahlstrom mentions in a study done in multiple different high schools, “Statistically significant increases in the 1st period grade point average in one or more core courses of English, math, social studies, and science with start times from 8:00-8:30 [in the morning]” (11). She then continues with, “Significant increases in grade point average in all 1st-period core courses for all semesters in all grades in Jackson Hole High School in Wyoming, with a start time of 8:55 [in the morning]” (11). This…

High schools throughout the United States start their school day at times that are too early for students. Teenagers have a biological wake time, and when schools start early in the morning, it interferes with teens biological clock. According to a study done by Harvard Medical School, young adults need at least nine hours of sleep every night. The study also shows that the need for sleep is never greater in our lives than it is during adolescence, but yet the conflict between school and sleep is at it’s highest while teens are in high school. Many educators believe that if teens just went to bed earlier, they would…

I think school should started later because kids need a full sleep. I think if school started later kids would learn better and not sleep in class. A later school start time has a positive effect on students’ grades. A later start gives students a longer attention span and a better morning.Schools should make sure their students are well rested and ready for a long day of learning. School should start later in the morning so students can get a full recommended nine and a half hours of sleep. When students must wake up early enough to get to class by 8 am, the result can be a severe sleep deficit. A delayed start time could help teens sleep during their natural sleep/wake cycles. Teens may be less likely to depend on caffeine to stay awake…
