Why Is Gangs Important In Oakland
Oakland has a high crime rate and it all evolves around gangs. Gangs are the major thing in Oakland, they are the ones to sale drugs, guns and are also the ones who are committing all kinds of crimes such as robbery and murders. In order to stop all of this there’s a lot to be done and it will need help from everyone in order to be able to make a difference. Making a positive change is always good, specially when it comes to bringing safety to people’s lives.

Gang activity is found all over Oakland, such as in streets, gang members house, parks, you even find them at the mall now and at theaters. It seems that no one is safe anymore. In Oakland is very common to hear about shootings, even in family parties. This shouldn’t be happening everyone should be able to feel safe in the place that they live in. Oakland has became a dangerous place and a solution to this must be found. …show more content…
The Border Brothers are the ones who wear black, and they’re location, as they call it, is in between the 600 block and the 900 block. The Nortenos are the ones to wear red and they’re locations are around the 200 block and 500 block. The Surenos are the ones to wear blue, they are more of a smaller gang in Oakland now, and they just revolve around the 100 block.     Chicago police are so busy fighting major crime, that people are starting to feel panicked and alone in the battle against violence. This sense of nervousness results in an increased possession of illegal firearms throughout the city, which in return is a possible reason for the high crime rates in Chicago. Not only do the police and gun problems result in violence, but so does the quality of life. The main problem with the quality of life in Chicago is that the youth is being introduced to violence at a very young age. Kids in many of the impoverished neighborhoods where the crime happens most, commonly spend most of their time out on the streets playing with other children. Some of these children don’t have great lives at home or a home at all. According to The Chicago Tribune, "There's too many young people who are out here who have no family, and so their friends become their family,"(Gorner). This can result in a dangerous situation because without the right role models, these children are prone to befriending dangerous people and can start to interact in the violence themselves, creating a whole cycle of danger. Obviously, Chicago can’t relieve its violence problem overnight, but with enough support and effort Chicago can surely bounce back to what it once was. The main solutions require additional employment opportunities in the city, an increase of community programs and a better relationship between law enforcement and citizens. This then causes for nothing to change and for the regulations that once criminalized them to only become worse. Regulations such as the police being able to search someone for “looking like a suspect,” the war on drugs, increased punishment for damage done by graffiti, and having a felony charge added to a different charge if they are associated with a gang caused for the social punitive of mass incarceration of young black and Latino men.
