Charlie was better off before the surgery. One reason for this is because he learned things he would have been happier not knowing. He also fell in love with Miss Kinnian which proved to be a bad thing. Another reason he was better before is due to the sickness he had after the surgery. One last reason is his attitude after the surgery.
Charlie learned that his friends like to laugh at him instead of with him, something he would have never known had he not had the surgery. He also suffered memory loss, headaches, and depression which made him feel horrible. He became more aggressive and quick-tempered.
