Why Do People Challenge Themselves
When the author Ralph Waldo Emerson says "Unless you try to do something that is beyond what you have mastered, you will not grow.'' I agree 100 percent. For example, When i am in the weight room, my coach always wants me to move up in weight because he wants me to get stronger. If i were to stay at the same weight every time i lifted i wouldn't get stronger, therefore i would not grow from where i started. Emerson is basically saying if you do the same thing that you already know how to do, you will not improve as a person. Everyone should challenge themselves whether it be at school, in a sport, or something simple at home. There are many reasons why people should challenge themselves. Some people may say that the only reason they do the same thing everyday …show more content…
Most people that push themselves to go to college usually have a happy and stressless life. 1 reason why people should challenge themselves everyday is because in the end it would make them a better person. People that do the exact same thing every single day do not grow from it at all and usually are miserable. If you have mastered something, you should want to improve, move on, not continue doing the same thing. That is what Emerson means by "you will not grow." To grow, means to get better or to improve in something. If people continue to do the same thing over and over, they tend to get unhappy and depressed because they are bored. The only reason people get bored is because they are used to the routine. In conclusion, Emerson is 100 percent right. If you challenge yourself or attempt to improve yourself, you will see that you will become a better person mentally and physically. Without challenging yourself you will become bored and not improve or grow as person. If you don't challenge yourself or try to improve as a person it could affect you later in life. People everyday challenge themselves no matter what it be in school or in a sport, and it makes them a better person in

Sullivan further states that vital qualities, such as grit, play a grander role in college readiness; due to the fact that perseverance, self-discipline, and passion are essential to create strong intellectual potentials. As well, any young adult is eventually given unlimited freedom; no control for this freedom given in college develops no maturity and no positive direction for the student. Without maturity, a moral attitude towards college and education will usually not develop in the manner that a prepared and successful student’s attitude…

The evidence the writer uses to elaborate on this specific statement is that one of his students was the one that told him these three words. It is explained in this paragraph that the educators of the students really fight the toughest battle because they have to try and get students to actually want to learn and not just going through the motions to get by. It is common that students have no desire to learn the material they need and in the end our satisfied with their C degree and also hope that they get a job that pays well and they are comfortable with it. The rhetorical questions in this paragraph are in depth and have specific reasoning behind it. Most of them are explaining how students with C degrees will benefit in a workplace or if they have enough motivation in themselves or co-workers to get a job done effectively. In the start of paragraph six it has been examined that students use to go to college at a point and time to learn and enhance their education, but now college is used for the benefit of getting a good job to help out your future or there are plenty of students that attend college because their parents made them or more so of a student trying to prove something to their parent that they are most likely not ready for anyway. The writer suggests that parents should examine how their child going to college will benefit them in the long run or is it really…

People born with natural talent hardly ever face challenges regarding the category they are proficient in. Imagine an academically gifted child, who decides to learn how to play the cello. This child quickly becomes frustrated with the advanced techniques and skills they are required to learn but cannot grasp, and quits altogether. Nothing was learned from this failure, the child did not retain any information they were taught regarding the cello. In the first paragraph of “Adversity: An Opportunity to Choose Growth” a nonfiction article by Camille Preston, Ph.D, PCC, it asks the rhetorical question:”What will [someone] do to turn adversity into a learning opportunity?” Few people turn mistakes into opportunities to grow as a person. Instead, they turn from one thing to the next, giving up every time they fail. Isn’t it best for people to stick to what they’re good at, in order to avoid getting hurt? Of course, some people claim to be “untalented”, but everyone enjoys doing something important to them - perfect at it or not. Being content with life is the end goal, and if someone has failed often enough to be dissatisfied with their life, it was not a happy life they lived. To quote Thomas Edison: “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Obviously, if someone does not succeed, they…

Since the beginning of our education we are taught that we have to go to college to be successful. However it now has become a debate whether it is actually beneficial or non beneficial on applying to college. Such as a big percentage of students don't become successful after college and just end up in debt. Such as a majority of students think that a high school education is just enough for them to get by. This puts a lot of pressure on students to be competitive and continually having to be doing their best trying to be the ideal student. This gives another reason for students not going to college, as they feel they do not portray the idealistic student who meets the rigorous needs.…

In Self Reliance, Ralph Waldo Emerson, a philosopher part of the Transcendentalism reform says, “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world”. This stresses the importance of having an honest mind, and how being accepting of your mistakes allows for growth. Having a growth mindset means that when faced with failure or difficulty, you are able to learn from that experience instead of giving up. The growth mindset has been proven to affect academic performance, and can be used to close the achievement gap that exists in socioeconomic groups.…

Society tends to believe that attending to college is something that everyone should do in order to live a successful and prosperous life. After doing research about the benefits of college, read different perspectives and opinions of different authors my view about college has changed. A lot of kids think that in order to get accepted into college you need to have perfect test scores and an exceptional gpa but that’s not true. Angel B. Is college worth going to? Does going to it help you in the future? Or does it just put you in debt? Many people think of college as something that everyone has to go to, to be successful in life. But it isn’t alway necessary to be successful. For example some of the most successful people in the world such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs dropped out of high school but are very proficient at what they do. Right now you may think that it doesn't matter if I go to college because they didn’t and yet they became very successful. But you’re wrong. Even though they succeeded when they dropped out and didn’t go to college it doesn’t mean you will. College is worth going to even if it costs thousand of dollars and even if you’re not meant to be there.…

In life trying to master something does not just come out of no where. You actually have to try to get there and grow as a person with going beyond what you have already done. I do agree with this quote. To me growing as a person would be doing what you do best but bigger and better than before. Mastering something only makes you grow it would never bring you down as a person. The only way I can and will grow as a person is if I master my fear of being who I am. For example, I take what other people say to me serious and it only brings me down. To better my self i need to master my fear of taking what other people say about me and just build confidence and grow. Taking the opinion of others into consideration will not let me become…

I’m currently a full-time student and working part time, this is what many people consider “the college life”, the time for you to enjoy and have fun. For me however, is the time to learn and absorb all I can. The present me will reflect the future me, what I do for myself now is what I’ll make of my future.…
