Who Was The Fault In King Claudius
Everyone has heard the saying that there are always two sides to each story. Finding fault is usually about perspective. People usually side with the person that is telling them the story at that time. The person that is telling the story usually builds it up to look like the good guy because they leave out all of their faults or cover them up and point out the other person faults. The same thing can be said for characters inside a story. We tend to place tags of which character is the hero and which one is the villain by which one is the main character in the story. The main character in the story is usually the person that is narrating the event the way they interrupted them. We just see the story from one side so we miss out on what may …show more content…
Claudius shows many characteristics of a villain but he also shows some characteristics that do not fit the usually criteria of a villain. If the story was told through Claudius perspective we might have seen him differently. Claudius has done a lot of bad things but, he is not all bad. Yes he killed his brother to become king and he was wrong for it but he was not a bad or harsh king. He was actually a pretty good king that cared for his people and his land. Most villains when they get in power they have some type of evil plan up their sleeves Claudius did not. He was a good leader and did not abuse his powers against his people like a lot of villains do. He does not fit into either category of a hero or a villain. He is in between the two because he shows some of both characteristics. Claudius acts and sin are too bad to be a hero and his feelings are too real to be a villain this is what makes Claudius so complex. Claudius cannot be accused by people of being truly evil. He walks a tight thin line that cannot fully be blurred either way. Claudius is a complex villain because he feels guilt, he loves Gertrude, and because the hero did some of the things that Claudius

Now wears his crown” (1.5.46-47). Claudius’s brother was a great warrior that probably ruled with ideas of justice and moral balance but Claudius is a corrupt politician, he rules with manipulation and does not even feel guilt for catalyzing the fall from grace of so many characters. He schemes and manipulates other characters to get what he desires. When Claudius was certain that Hamlet knew of his lie about his brothers death he planned a match between Laertes and Hamlet in which Hamlet was not suppose to come out as the victor. Claudius will stop at nothing to maintain his power if he has he heart to murder his own brother, he will have the heart to murder anyone that blocks him from his goal. It is his own scheming that leads to his death, if power is gained by lies and manipulation more lies and manipulation must take place to maintain it and that life can only be held a secret for so long. The constant deaths, spying and confusion led many to become mad. His lack of guilt can be seen when he openly shows his affection for his wife in front of Hamlet and does it in a very obnoxious way. This affection for his wife is questionable because of his need for power. It is not certain whether or not Claudius actually has sincere feelings towards Gertrude or whether she is just another character playing a part in his lie, something that just came along with what he truly wanted, the crown. However even though his motives for marrying the queen are questionable, if he does not truly love Gertrude he covers it up well, showing once again his good use of manipulation. He openly shows affection and even declares his love in words, “The…

So to conclude, despite his reign lasting a short amount of time (13 years) he did a lot to restore the Roman empire, and proved to be fairly successful. In truth, he was an able administrator and ruled well, making many improvements in the government. He believed that the best way to rule was to treat the people as equals. As the black sheep of his family, nobody expected Claudius to become emperor. Yet, against the odds throughout his life, he became an emperor, made many contributions to the benefit of the Roman…

Claudius & Lady Catherine De Bourgh have some obvious differences such as their gender and marital status. One is a male, and married, the other is a widowed female. But some other differences that really make them different from each other is how they use their power and how they accept failure. In the play Hamlet, Claudius is viewed by readers to be manipulative and sneaky. He uses his power through his actions. For example, in the play, Claudius tells Laertes that Hamlet has murdered his father. The only motive Claudius has for telling this information is so Laertes will seek revenge on Hamlet. Where as in contrast, Lady Catherine De Bourgh is considered to be a blunt and straight…

In “Hamlet in Pieces” by Andy Lavender, Claudius is described as "calm, reasonable, decisive," yet a small play scares. Claudius showed no aspects of the Machiavellian he was originally thought to be after he is shaken up by Hamlet’s little show. Instead, he hastily orders the death of Hamlet. Rather than slaying Hamlet himself, Claudius has others attempt to do so. Perhaps this is so because he needs everyone, including Gertrude, to perceive him as a good king. The murder of her son by her husband's hand would cause unrest in Gertrude. Claudius could not lose one of his key aspects for stealing the throne in the first…

Claudius’ subjects are not pleased with him and are in a revolt against him. He strays from Machiavelli’s path once again and failing to gain support from the people, proves Machiavelli right when Fortinbras destroys Claudius’ fortress, taking over Denmark. Even though Claudius did have his fair share of errors, he did manage to have a powerful influence. He had Old Fortinbras stop Young Fortinbras in pursuing his ambitions to overtake Denmark. Also, Claudius took the initiative to obtain a powerful alliance with the monarch of England. So much so that he asked him to execute Hamlet. All in all, Claudius used his infallible appearance to obscure his dark reality. The appearance gained him power, although the reality is what prevailed in the…

Claudius and the sisters Goneril and Regan are nearly the same when examined. Claudius is the plays antagonist and main villain. He is the brother to King Hamlet, second husband to Gertrude, and uncle to Prince Hamlet. Claudius obtained the throne by murdering his own brother purely out of greed and ambition. On top of murdering him, he also married the late king’s wife, Gertrude. Claudius’ treachery is driven by his sexual desire for Gertrude and lust for power. While the other men in Hamlet are occupied with the ideas of justice and revenge, Claudius’ mind is overwhelmed with the task of maintaining his rule. Throughout the play he kills who he needs too in order to hold the throne, for he only thinks about his own wellbeing. Claudius is a true sinner for he knows he has brought a curse to himself by murdering his own brother. “O, my offence is rank it smells to heaven; It hath the primal eldest curse upon’t, A brother’s murder.”-Claudius (3.3.39) He’s aware of his villainy, but instead of ending the circle of madness he’s created, his hunger for power clouds his judgment. Claudius causes is own undoing.…

Claudius is deceiving everybody in his life. He deceives all the people around him regarding his brother's death: " Oh 'tis true too true! How smart a lash that speech doth give my conscience! The harlots's cheek, beautified with plastering art. Is not more ugly to the thing that helps its than is my deed to my most painted word. O heavy burden!" (3.1 50-55) Claudius is feeling guilty that he killed King Hamlet which was his brother. He used deception for his own personal gain because now Claudius is king as a result of King Hamlet being killed. Secondly, Claudius tells Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to decide Hamlet by going and spending time with him, but they were actually sent by Claudius to spy on Hamlet. " To visit you my lord, my lord, no other occasion." (2.2) Again Claudius is using deception for his own personal gain and he is also trying to gather evidence on Hamlet by sending Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to watch Hamlet very closely. Also Claudius deceived Rosecrantz and Guildenstern by telling them Hamlet is being shipped to England beacasue he has gone mad and he has to calm down, but really he is sending him to be killed: " Our soverign process, whic imports at full, by letters congruing to that effect, the present death of Hamlet, Do it, England." (4.3 64-66) Claudius is lying to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern becasause he wants Hamlet to be killed and that is one of his goals. Claudius uses deception to allow Hamlet to be killed which is a personal gain…

However, Claudius, whom Hamlet calls inherently evil and corrupt, was lurking on the fringes of the family during Hamlet’s reign. Because the disease, Claudius, was not removed prior to Hamlet’s death, Claudius was allowed to succeed Hamlet as king and corrupt the entire state. By assuming power, Claudius’ disease pervades through the whole family and ruins any vestiges of…

Shakespeare develops Hamlet’s character in relation to Claudius. First example is Hamlet puts on a play to see if Claudius would break down and confess that he killed King Hamlet. “That guilty creatures sitting at a play. Have by the very cunning of the scene, been struck so to the soul that presently. They have proclaimed their malefactions.” (Shakespeare, 2:2, lines 567-570). Hamlet invited players to come to the castle and perform a play for the king and queen. The play is going to reenact the night Claudius killed King Hamlet. Second example is Hamlet seeks revenge on Claudius. “Prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell.” (Shakespeare, 2:2, line 562). When Hamlet saw the ghost of his dad in act 1, his dad said he needs to seek revenge on Claudius. Final example is Claudius…

Throughout the play Hamlet, a bunch of different characters are seen, all with very different goals and different lives. With those goals comes a different stand on moral issues. While it is very hard to say who the "best" and "worst" characters are in this play, one can make his own personal interpretations of the characters and their actions.
