There are many reasons why I have chosen to draw out this particular scenery from the novel. The main reason is because this was the first clear and luminous image that I imagined in my head after Golding had described it. When I first read that part in the book, I imagined a quiet, beautiful clearing in a dense and still part of the woods, where there was a small cave covered in a thicket and hidden from everything. I imagined the noise and laughter of the boys fading as Simon slowly walked away from them, toward his place of serenity. Since Simon needed a place to concentrate and think, I chose to draw an area in the woods where there was a totally peaceful ambiance, a place where you wouldn't hear the slightest chirping of birds nor the rustling of leaves. Of course, Simon did not actually hide in a cave in the woods, but this was the first thing I imagined when I read it. I believe that a cave, no matter how mysterious it may be, will be able to protect you and truly bring you comfort knowing that you would not be disturbed or harmed. It gives you peace and puts your heart at rest. The reason why I have left the entrance to the cave blank is because there are many viewpoints about what may be present in there. You may see an ordinary quiet boy named Simon sitting peacefully in there, or may see the red, glaring eyes of a beast lurking out, some may see just a dark, mysterious entrance to a cave, while others may see a bright light of treasure shining out.
