Who Is Ellen Degeneres
On January 26, 1958 Ellen Lee DeGeneres was born in Metairies, Louisiana and was raised by two working parents. When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, Ellen initially said that she aspired to be a veterinarian but later discarded the idea because she wasn’t “ book smart.” Before she discovered her comedic talents, Degeneres used to sell vacuum cleaners, paint houses, wait tables, and work as a legal secretary. Her older brother, Vance, inspired DeGeneres to become the actor/comedian that we know today, since he was known as the humorous member of the family and was a former correspondent for The Daily Show. After being forced in an uncomfortable situation, she used comedy as an escape from her nervousness and fright. Ever since then, Ellen was asked to do improv many famous talk shows such as The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and Larry King Live. …show more content…
In addition, DeGeneres has raised more than $10 million for families affected by Hurricane Katrina, donated more than $35 million of her own money, raised $12.5 million for breast cancer, and even more charitable contributions such as a $125,000 gift to a middle school in Louisiana for rebuilding purposes after devastating floods hit the state, donating $500,000 to help rebuild a decrepit elementary school in Detroit, and kindly offering $25,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
