Jackson Pollock
White Light, 1954.
Oil, enamel, and aluminum paint on canvas, 48 1/4 x 38 1/4” (122.4 x 96.9 cm).

This assignment is a three page essay critique over a two dimensional work of art. As you have learned in the first chapter, a critique often involves both a formal evaluation of the work (based on its physical appearance) and a contextual critique considering the artist’s style, intention, and historical time period. You will consider several questions which will help you generate an essay about the painting “White Light” by Jackson Pollock. You should carefully read the chapter on two dimension art in your textbook first. Your response to the assignment must be prepared according to standard college writing practices, using MLA format. Fragmented sentences and spelling errors are not acceptable, so please be sure to spell check your essay. Please make sure you write a minimum of three pages. Your response should not be a list of answers, but rather a reflective response to each question written in an essay. Devote at least a paragraph to each question.
1. Using the terms in the textbook about color, explain what color choices you see in this painting. For example, are the colors primary, tertiary, etc. ? Are they complimentary and intense of soft and close in value?

2. Does line or shape/form seem to be the most dominate element? Explain your choice.

3. Select two principles of design you think strengthen this work visually. 4. If it were possible to count the number of layers of paint, how many would you estimate there to be? Explain how you determined this, and explain how texture is created in this work (you might refer to the video link for consideration if this question).

5. Consider what elements stimulate our senses in this work. Is it contrast, is there a focus? Does the work feel dynamic? You choose, but please explain your choice.

6. Critics have described Pollock's style as "rendering energy visible".

The color palette of the painting is diverse, while red and warm earth tones dominate the painting. The light source seems to be in front of the left section of the picture while dispersing towards the right. The use of light gives the illusions of volume. The gradation of the sky is very exaggerated. The top is a dark blue and as it reaches the middle the sky is very light. The painting has a smooth finish and is very detailed. The flowers on the bottom are very intricate as well as the patterns of the people’s garments. Each face has a distinguished and unique appearance; no two faces are…

With the double painting constructions, back-to-back paintings fold into one condensing my experience of open space into a freestanding entity, where colour and form reposition with each viewpoint. A visual play can be entered into in much the same way we take pleasure in absorbing an immense landscape that encompasses our peripheral vision. It is here that I ask the viewer to imagine or determine the boundaries of form.…

I have to say that the Night Café by Vincent van Gogh on page 17 is my favorite work so far. The contrast of warm and cool colors are amazing. They present the perfect equilibrium for this painting. They kind of put me in the mood to listen to some blues or jazz while gazing upon the painting. I can imagine a stage, at the bottom right of the painting, with a saxophonist playing. As I observe, I can’t help but notice the lone man next to the couple asleep and the two buddies on the far right side drunk. One might ask “ How do you know they are drunk?” Well, no one would fall asleep in a night café with a friend. The more believable scenario is that they were drinking and passed out. The artist’s play with colors along with his character seem to give this work it’s name. The way the lights seem animated and vibrating makes the café come alive for me. They create a warm feeling and yet the green ceiling cools everything down. Van Gogh’s Night Café looks like a place to just “chill”. After careful inspection it seems to have been created by someone from the outside looking in. Did you notice that the gentleman in the white is posing just for the viewer as if to say “Cheese!” There is great texture in this painting. The use of red, yellow and brown really made the floorboards look real. He uses all types of lines but mostly soft brush strokes to make everything recognizable yet just beyond absolute. It works for this art. It leaves things up to the viewer’s imagination; what kind of drinks are in the wine glasses, what nationality the people are, what they are really doing,…

a)The gentleman read about the portrait in the book he had found in the room. The book describes the woman in the painting as a “cheerful maiden” who marries the painter for love. The painter is as much in love with his wife as he is with his artwork. His wife is a naturally happy woman, but despises his art because she feels like she has to compete with his paintings for his love. Her husband asks his wife to sit as a model for one of his portraits. As much as she hates this idea, she agrees to sit for him because she knows how much his art means to him. She sits in the dark tower where the light only comes from above so her husband can paint. Her husband continues to paint his wife, while she sits very still; he does not notice that she is wasting away into the darkness. As his painting becomes more life-like, his wife becomes paler. As her husband finally finishes his painting he realizes that his wife had already dies during his last few brush strokes.…
