Louis Pasteur discovered the process of pasteurization. In 1854 Pasteur was named dean of the faculty of science which was a program designed to find “means of applying science to the practical problems of the industries of that region.” The focus was on alcoholic beverages and as he threw himself into his work he found that wine, alcohol and milk were all souring because of fermentation because there were bacteria and other organisms already present. He was able to discover a pasteurization process which eliminated the bacteria by heating it to a high temperature.
These discoveries led to Pasteur question the presence of bacteria. “Where did these “germs” come from? Were they spontaneously produced in substances themselves
