The differences of the characterization of characters from the book to the film by Frank Darabont were portrayed in a way that he saw the characters, and in a way that his audience would get the best understanding of them. This was also due to cutting the movie, some

characters were taken out, others were combined. In the book Andy is made out to be a short man but in the movie Andy is Tall. Red also was changed from being Irish to an African

    Another noticeable change in the movie verses the book was the emphasis on the different characters. The main character was indisputably Michael Oher in both the book and the movie. However, the movie put a strong emphasis on Leigh Anne Touhy (who was played by Sandra Bullock) and presented her as the second most major character aside from Michael. The book, on the other hand, had a lot more facts about Sean that the movie never presented. Leigh Anne was a key player in both, but in the movie, she seemed to be so much more of a main character that the other characters that stood out in the book did not do so in the movie. The major example of that was Sean Touhy who seemed to be the first one to invest in Michael in the book unlike the movie where he played a more quiet and uninvolved role in Michael's life. There were other subtle differences that could be noticed, like having the necessary GPA for an NCAA scholarship be 2.5 (movie) instead of 2.56 (book) which led to another problem to work around, or having Michael's fight be with the gang members in his old neighborhood (movie) instead of with one of his teammates at Ole Miss (book). Overall, however, the movie attempted to portray an accurate account of the book which made it enjoyable to read and watch both.…

    Some of the characters in the film are how they are portrayed in the book, whereas many are quite different. In the book Ivy Lloyd (Poison Ivy) is Josie’s arch enemy and Carly is just someone who is mentioned in chapter 8, whereas in the movie Ivy and Carly have been blended into the same character. The fights between Josie and Ivy have been omitted and they don’t reconcile their differences at the end. Also in the book Josie has three friends, Anna, Sera and Lee but in the movie Lee has been blended into both Sera and Anna. In the book Lee has a different point of view and brings more to the group of friends. Other characters such as Josie (Pia Miranda), John Barton (Matthew Newton) and Michael Andretti (Anthony LaPaglia) are well casted in these roles for the movie because they looked like they were described in the book. Christina, Josie’s mum, looked too much like Marcus Stanford in the movie and in the book was described to look more Italian. All in all the characters in the movie were very good interpretations of the characters in the book.…
