Raymond Carver’s portrayal of the setting, the physical environment and the homes his characters inhabit completely correlate to a sentimental connection the characters have in their particular stories. Common themes of conflict, acceptance, and separation signify the characters struggle within the stories, more so relating to the differences with their significant others or their family. Carver’s use of household separation and the seasonal influence within the story “A Serious Talk” signifies the characters indifferences as the story progresses. As for the story “Popular Mechanics”, the setting helps foreshadow the relationship at the brink of a devastating occurrence/interpretation. Furthermore, this paper will identify the significance…

“A Serious Talk” by Raymond Carver describes an unhealthy relationship between Burt and Vera, and, depending on whose perspective, their relationship after their separation. On one hand, Vera has moved on; she is in a relationship with another man, and even celebrates Christmas with his children. On the other hand, Burt still sees Vera as his wife. Overall, Carver illustrates differences in perspective and how they cause disputes.…
I was most impressed with Professor Robert J. Sternberg’s Theory of love which simply states that love is made up of three interconnected components: intimacy, passion and decision/commitment. They are thought of as the triangular effect that displays intimacy in terms of closeness, bonding and warmth. It also shows passion as the sexual feelings and desires brought on and it shows commitment as the decision to make the relationship continue on. I really was touched by this theory because it is so relative to my life now. I am married almost five years now and my marriage has seen a multiplicity of ups and downs. However, after considering this model and theory of love and discussing with my wife, we have resolved to find ways and utilize this model to strengthen our relationship.…
The similarities between Raymond Carver’s parents’ relationship and the relationship between him and his first wife are very interesting. Carver…
Love is an emotion that varies from couple to couple, we can see this is both “The Storm” and in “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.” In these stories we have three different couples who are all very much in love. In “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” we have Mel and Terri who have been married for four years and are already pretty comfortable in their relationship. Also there are Nick and Laura who have only been married for a year and a half. In “The Storm” we have Alcee and Calixta who are lovers who each have their own spouses. After reading the stories we are left to reflect on not only their relationships but also on our own.…

Then Terri said “He beat me up one night (170).” This form of love would be stated as Eros love. Eros love, in my opinion is the deepest form of love because it is an emotion and physical way of showing love. In the short story, What We talk about when we talk about love, Raymond carver shows this type of love in various ways. This form of loves also ties into any type of love that a spy believes they are showing. One occasion of a spy showing love like Terri and her ex-husband was the showing of James Bond in the film Goldeneye. In particular is the scene of Bond and Xenia. Bond is relaxing in a spa type of area and Xenia comes into the same room as him showing him a lot of sexual attention. Xenia is also a spy and in this scene she is doing this to obtain important information from him. They both kiss and fight until Bonds stops all of the nonsense. This scene validates the fact that a spy cannot be trusted or capable of love. Xenia went in the room for one reason which wasn’t to have a good time with Bond. Again this showed the form of Eros love, but it showed that a spy cannot love this deeply. It showed that a spy cannot care for someone as deeply as they care for their work. Another example from What We talk about when we talk about love is the relationship between the young couple. This young couple, Laura and Nick, were full of love because they just started…

How does society impact our hopes and dreams ? Well many people give out speeches or love cards to make some one feel special. Like in the story of ''Love Vocabulary'', Ms. Ackerman explains what loves means to her. She talks about how she feels about love, and that to make or feel people the same way she views loves. But she changes lot in her mood and ton. At one point she says that " what a small world we use for an idea so immense and powerful it had altered the flow of history", what she means by that is that love is so powerful that nobody can stop it from growing into history. Ms. Ackerman try to give hope to people that love for them is possible, its a dream we all have to chase a dream of the love we have for some one. But right after…
In the beginning of “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” Mel’s talk about spiritual love meant the most to me. I have always been very strong spiritually, and very strong in my faith and love with God. Throughout the conversations in “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” there are three main types of love discussed. Mel has stories trying to pinpoint true love, Nick and Laura are newlyweds that think they are in love, and Terri looks at love from an abusive standpoint. Mel makes many comments about his viewpoints on love; through those comments, the reader is able to tell that Mel looks at love as a spiritual aspect.…

I believe that love is more than just a word, I believe that love is what makes the world go round and is the driving force behind everything, I believe that love is the thing that can make any human happy, but at the same time can be the source of their insanity. One thing i've been trying to figure out is what drives a person to be sad or happy? I've always thought happiness is what you make it out to be, and is different for every single person, but one thing i'm almost positive about, is that we all find happiness in love. Ever since I was a kid, i've always thought that getting married to the person of your dreams was the ultimate life goal, and to me, still is the ultimate life goal. Recently i've met a girl, she's the most amazing woman i've ever met, and ever will meet. She is…
India suffers from the problem of overpopulation. The population of India is very high at an estimated 1.27 billion.[1][2][3] Though India ranks second in population, it ranks 33 in population density. Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India, had implemented a forced sterilization programme in the early 1970s but the programme failed. Officially, men with two children or more were required to be sterilised, but many unmarried young men, political opponents and ignorant, poor men were also believed to have been affected by this pogramme. This program is still remembered and regretted in India, and is blamed for creating a public aversion to family planning, which hampered Government programmes for decades.[4]…
