'What We Talk About When We Talk About Love'
In the beginning of “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” Mel’s talk about spiritual love meant the most to me. I have always been very strong spiritually, and very strong in my faith and love with God. Throughout the conversations in “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” there are three main types of love discussed. Mel has stories trying to pinpoint true love, Nick and Laura are newlyweds that think they are in love, and Terri looks at love from an abusive standpoint. Mel makes many comments about his viewpoints on love; through those comments, the reader is able to tell that Mel looks at love as a spiritual aspect. Mel is the first one to speak stating that he thought true love was “nothing less than spiritual love” (Carver, …show more content…
Terri felt strong about the fact that true love was abusive. “Terri said the man she lived with before she lived with Mel loved her so much that he almost killed her” (Carver, p 656). She stated that, “ He beat me up one night. He dragged me around the living room by my ankles.” He kept saying, “I love you, I love you b**ch” (Carver, p 656, 657). Mel is the first to speak up and say that is not true love. Terri still believes that there is still love there. Laura is brought into the conversation. She talks about not being able to judge another person's situation. Terri then states, “When I left, he drank rat poison” (Carver, p657). That statement shows that Terri feels that he had true love for her because he was willing to kill himself when she left. Nick and Laura demonstrate that they think they know what love is through their actions throughout the story, and Laura stating, “Well, Nick and I know what love is” ( Carver, p659). They are newlyweds that haven’t really encountered relationship problems yet. They are still in the honeymoon phase. They are often kissing and blushing around each other. Nick says, "In addition to being in love, we like each other and enjoy one another's company. She's easy to be with." ( Carver, 659). They believe they have the true perfect love and know exactly what love

The Four Loves, authored by British novelist C.S. Lewis, is often viewed as one of the best books written on the subject of love as it pertains to religion. In the book, Lewis covers many ideas including the four types of love which include: storgé (empathetic love/affection), philia love (the love between friends), Eros (erotic/romantic love), and Agapé (the unconditional ‘God’ love). In this book, Lewis also covers the differences between need and gift love; however, one of the most astounding statements that Lewis makes is in the storgé passage, specifically in the section about affection where he states, “Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our natural lives.” (pg. 53). Lewis also states, "The highest does not stand without the lowest. (pg.9) If affection is part of storgé, which is considered the lowest love, then to obtain the higher loves one must have affection. Furthermore, storgé (commonly referred to as affection) creates stamina in natural relations between people due precisely to that low-level nature it…

In the book, A Bolt of White Cloth, love is referred to in many different forms. Love is like a road, endless. Much like a road, love has a plethora of pathways and an abundance of obstacles. A road has many signals such as traffic lights, telling you when to go and when to stop. Although less obvious, love has those same signals. On page 64 he says, "But I am slow thinking and full of interior rules that act as they brakes on my desires, and I knew that first I had to get myself out of that tangle back home. I'd been writing letters once a week and signing them 'love, Nick,' and all I could think of was how when a certain girl played tennis, a faint moustache appeared on her upper lip. Nevertheless there was a vague understanding that had to be tactfully broken off before I was free." Nick goes by the emotions he has by the moment. He does not know what commitment is. He 'loved' this girl back home, but as soon as he found someone else attractive he suddenly forgot what made him love the girl back home. Now she would only get in the way of love. This proves love to Nick is only a possession, and when he did not have his possession with him, he found a replacement. It did not even matter to him that Miss Baker was dishonest and immoral. He was dishonest and shallow, but no different than anyone else during this…
