What Was The Significance Of The Gettysburg Address
The Gettysburg Address is still read and significant today because it is the ideals upon which our nation was founded. Lincolns words “government of the people, by the people, for the people” continues to speak for many today. At this time in the middle of the Civil War people were discouraged. Citizens needed something to believe in. In the Gettysburg Address Lincoln described the wonderful things the nation was fighting for. It was a new interpterion of American government and society. It was about preserving self-government. Before the Gettysburg Address the war was manly about state rights. Lincoln redefined the meaning of conflict by changing it into a more noble purpose. Lincoln effectively made the people aware of their rights. He said

    Both The Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address were written during times of turmoil and change for the country. Both occurred during a time of war in which America was fighting for liberty and freedoms. During the Revolutionary War, the United States was trying to become “a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal”. It was battling for independence and the right to govern them in a way that would actually benefit the country and its people. Both these eras were a time of testing for the United States. The Revolutionary War period determined whether the states would actually be able to achieve independence.
