What life lessons does Cole learn through his ordeal? Cole learns many life lessons throughout the whole story like for example not needing to prove that he’s telling the truth, how to forgive, and how to heal is anger. Each one of these lessons, Cole did not come up by himself. I guess that's another life lesson, you can’t do everything by yourself. I think Cole is like any other teenage kid nowadays, they think they're the center of the universe, and if someone doesn't agree with us we either pretend they don’t exist or we treat them badly. But in this story, Cole learned that he is far from the center of the universe, in fact is very very tiny, and he accepts that idea.

If you keep telling someone that you're right, then you have to come up with some evidence saying that your correct probably means that the person you're talking to knows you have a history of lying. That’s what had happened to Cole, he lied so much that it was pretty much impossible. Like when Cole told Garvey that he was serious about circle justice, but he just didn’t want to go to jail. He also lied about being sorry for beating up Peter during the first circle justice meeting. Cole will lie to get himself out of anything, but after the bear mauling he realizes if he wants people to believe him he has to stop proving that

He used to resort to blaming other for what happens to him, and that it's never his fault. He always found a loophole for him to go through and put the fault on someone else. If you can’t take responsibility for your actions how are you supposed to forgive, not just someone else, but yourself. Self forgiveness is very hard because that means you’re most likely feeling guilty about something you did. And also guilt leads to being angry with yourself, and if you're angry at yourself you take it out on other people. So it all kinda snowballs up and leads to many terrible

A flashback explains to us how Cole got to Alaska in the first place. A native of Minnesota, he had been in the juvenile justice system for quite some time, and his wealthy and well-connected parents usually would get him out of trouble with the law. Recently, however, Cole broke into a store illegally, but when he bragged about it to one of his classmates, Peter Driscal, Peter turned him in. In revenge, Cole beat Peter up very badly, causing Peter head trauma and a permanent speech problem. Cole was taken back into juvenile detention. but without help down the sidewalk leading away from the hospital. No longer did he have full use of his right arm. His many scars made him stiff, and limping helped ease the pain gnawing at his hip. Garvey walked patiently alongside. Cole’s mother followed several long steps behind. Beside her walked the guard who had arrived to escort Cole back to the detention center. The guard watched with a close eye. He had wanted to handcuff Cole, but Garvey took him aside. A heated discussion followed. Finally, the guard nodded reluctantly and allowed Cole to walk freely during the transfer.…

Being a psychiatrist, I have heard a lot of crazy stories, but my friend Charley’s story is by far the craziest. I was sitting at my brown wooden desk in my small lavender smelling office when I heard a knock at the door. Knock. Knock. Immediately, Charley walked in wearing a tan gabardine suit, and a straw hat with a fancy black band. He had a smile from ear to ear and would not stop talking about the third level at Grand Central Station. A few minutes later, Charley asked, “Do you believe in time travel?” before I could answer he shouted, “Well I do! I was transported to 1894, but when I tried to purchase two coach tickets to Galesburg, Illinois, I didn’t have the right currency. Therefore, I went to the bank and drew out $300 and went to the nearest coin dealer and got less than $200 in old-time…

In my opinion Cole learns that anger is something that you can control if you are willing to and that it takes time to do so. The ways he learned to control it was by performing those daily routines that Garvey and Edwin showed him, which would eventually help him in his recovery. For example in chapter 17 Edwin told Cole “We’re going swimming,” Cole responded “Are you nuts?” this routine was actually soaking in the pond which would later big come a big thing for Cole, helping him relieve his mind and forget about things. At first in the book it did mention that they seemed useless to him, but as time went by he learned the value of them.…

“My theory on life is that life is beautiful. Life doesn't change. You have a day, and at night, and a mouth, and a year. We people change - we can be miserable or we can be happy. It’s what you make of your life.” (Brainy Quotes) Cole is a 15 year old boy from Minneapolis. He has dealt with the police for half of his life because his parents don’t care about him.The reason why Cole beats up other kids is, he doesn’t care about his life at all. Why Cole needs to change is, he’s constility beating up kids for no reason. When he is older if he doesn’t stop, he will be in jail for a long time. The three reasons why I think Cole has shown a change is, he owns up to things, Cole wants to go back to the island and Cole wants to help Peter through…

Growing up in New York City has been one of my biggest blessing. I’ve met with so many different personalities and cultures that I feel more well rounded by default. One thing that I’ve always found lacking in the city is the presence of small stable communities. My elementary school had 800 kids and my high school has over 5000 kids. Barnard offers the best of both worlds for meーa small college community situated in the best city in the world.…

The first internal conflict is anger. Cole’s father abused him, which created stress and anger inside of him. This anger causes Cole to commit crimes. Cole robbed and trashed a hardware store. Peter, a boy at Cole’s school, found out that Cole did this act of violence. So, Peter told on Cole. Cole found out, in which he got very angry and mad. Instead of confronting Peter, Cole decided to smash Peter’s head against the sidewalk, very hardly. Once Cole was sent to the island of Drake in Alaska, Cole felt depressed and angry at the same time. Cole eventually burnt down his cabin. One last example of anger is dealing with the Spirit Bear. The Spirit Bear was calmly looking at Cole. Cole realized that this bear was not afraid of him. So, Cole let out his anger and tried to kill the bear. Instead of Cole hurting the bear, the bear mauled Cole. Cole was on the ground, almost dying for about three days. Even though Cole seems like a person who is not afraid of anything, there is actually some fear built somewhere in his body.…

Caleb was always the neglected child. He was quiet and timid as a young boy. When turned thirteen everything about Caleb changed, he became a delinquent. He was tall and really fit. His brown shaggy hair was always messy; he never seemed to comb it. His eyes were as blue as the clear blue sky. He was very anti-social: he didn’t have friends so he kept to himself all the time. His parents did not pay attention to him at all; they thought working all day and night was a good idea. Caleb was always being neglected by his parents physically and emotionally. He started getting into trouble at school for either fighting or for not listening to the teachers and using bad language. The reasons he would fight at school is because the other kids teased him about the way he was. He didn’t like to talk to the other kids and at lunch he would eat alone by the trash cans. And the kids would bully him so that is when Caleb started to fight back. His parents didn’t seemed like they cared because when this happened they would just go down to the office and apologize to the principle and take Caleb home and that would be it. They acted like if they didn’t even have time for things that involved him. Not even him getting in fights at school. Caleb seemed to show that he didn’t…
