What Is Latinx Discrimination

Discrimination is everywhere. Its limits are not just to race, nationality, or sexuality. One can be discriminated against for evert part of their character, including the way they speak. Language and speech discrimination is something we often look over as a nation. Because language is not just something that we acquire from the environment we grow up in but also a subject taught in school. Thus, the way a person speaks id often tied to their ability to learn and intelligence leading to a number of linguist discriminatory actions. We see much of this discrimination directed at the Latinx community. Latinx can be discriminated against for speaking Spanish, not speaking Spanish, mixing Spanish and English while it seems their Anglo counterparts
Not only is it discriminatory and offensive, it often gets passed over as a funny joke. As Zentella explained, responding to these jokes is a lose-lose situation for Latinx. They don’t want to laugh along to these offensive jokes but if they don't, they will be called uptight and no fun. In the SNL skit, we see a different kind of mock Spanish. The White reporters over pronounce every Spanish word they say. The people who speak like this and most other White people would see this as impressive, and maybe even respectful, when it is really just ignorant. They are certainly not bilingual or are they respectful to Spanish. It is their over-pronunciation that makes them feel more prestigious and simultaneously reveals their lack of knowledge of Spanish. When the Latino reporter joins he initially tried to ignore it and just pronounces the words with a standard American accent. The White reporters initially ignore is pronunciation as well. They can clearly understand what he is talking about. Without the mock- Spanish pronunciation. Which shows how unnecessary it is. But Jimmy could not take it anymore when the White reporters chose not to understand his pronunciation of “Enchilada”. He was compelled to conform to their exaggerated pronunciation in a effort to show them how ridiculous what they are doing is. But this notion went directly over their heads as that accent fit how they believed he should be
