What Is Asheville Stressful?
Before I started at UNCA I expected my education to be intimidating, hard, challenging and stressful. I expected myself to be a tiny little fish traveling in a sea of others. To an extent, that is true, but it is not as bad as I was expecting it to be. I didn’t know much about Asheville before I came. I knew that Asheville was a beautiful, populated, tourist city. I only gathered information about Asheville from my co-worker because she was born and raised in Asheville. Her description of Asheville is what made me excited to attend UNCA. When I was informed that I would be taking a Literature class revolved around the history of Asheville, I was so excited. My main goal as a freshman was to learn more about the city and the region. My experiences …show more content…
It has been challenging just like I expected it to be. I also believe that I talked myself into being stressed because I expected it to happen. It was surprising because I found to be true that the main reason of stress is procrastination and a negative mind set. I have experienced many joys and triumphs. The triumphs that I have experienced is when I made good grades after a long stressful week, overcoming stressful time periods, and struggling as a college student to make my way through the town of Asheville. Also, I found triumph whenever I overcame large papers that caused me a vast amount of stress. Because of these joys and triumphs, I am stronger than I was a long time ago. These joys and triumphs have been the product of help from my peers and professors by asking questions, having study sessions, and visiting office hours. As a product of my own skill and labor, I have studied on my own, visited the library, answered my own questions, and involved interesting ways to remember challenging material. There were also times where I encountered problems and struggles. I encountered problems such as finding a balance between social life and education. In the beginning of the semester I struggled to stay devoted to my academics because I wanted to do this and do that. I wanted to go out with my friends, go downtown, etc. I also struggled with motivation to complete my work efficiently. I struggled with time management.

The reason my academics aren’t going well as you or I would like is because of the several family issues I’ve had to face during my high school career. It began my Sophomore year, I found out my mom needed surgery in her arm so the chances of her cancer spreading would be reduced. I was under a great deal of stress worrying about my mother, taking care of my four siblings making sure they knew everything was going to be okay, even though I wasn’t sure myself. It was all up to me; while my other brother worked to help with bills, my mom being in the hospital, and my dad working. Taking care of my siblings consisted of cooking, homework, cleaning, nightly routine, and putting them to bed. When the work was done it would be around 10 o'clock. It was already tough to buckle down and focus on homework without all the stress. With all this my first semester grade was less than great.…

Stress has probably existed for as long as mankind has. You would commonly hear someone say “I am under so much stress” and that they are very stressed out, but what is stress exactly? I believe that stress is a feeling of being under a lot of pressure, having a huge burden on your shoulders. Everyone handles and thinks of stress differently in many ways with different kinds of remedies and solutions. Some people tend to let the stress get to them and can get very emotional about it. Others can handle it very well and stay calm and work well with it. All in all, everyone has different ways of dealing with stress, including Pat Tillman from Where Men Win Glory and Charlie from The Perks of Being a Wallflower, in which Tillman deals with his…

Due to the fact that I cannot change the cafeteria food, I could buy groceries that are easy to take on the go so I do not skip meals, I also cannot change the work load I am given for my classes. What I can do space out my assignments more so I am not as overwhelmed. I could definitely work on my time management. The most important change I could make is make sure I get enough sleep. This correlates to the time management aspect. I have to make sure I get things done at a reasonable time to get enough sleep. The amount of sleep I get impacts my whole day and it becomes a domino effect. It impacts my concentration, motivation, and attitude throughout the whole…

Reading My Freshman Year: What a Professor Learned By Becoming a Student twelve years after it was published is similar to what Rebekah Nathan experienced when comparing her notes to Michael Moffat. I found myself recognizing some of her observations but with others I was completely lost. At times, I wondered if the changes between her vision and mine were due to the changes in time, or changes in college. The university she studied was a state university that is very large. While University of Maine at Farmington is also a state university, it is extremely small for a public school and that affects the culture of it.…

When I attended Eastern as a ripe 18 year old, straight out of high school, I had a romanticized ideal about what would happen. My expectations were framed in part from things I had seen in movies, and stories I had heard from friends when they attended their first semester of college. Having had an easy time in high school, never studying, never having to work very hard for an A; I spent the first few weeks of college trying to adjust to having professors who don't know your name and do not care if you attend class. The new found freedom I had acquired by moving into the dorm and away from my mother, weighed on me like a fifty pound block. I made poor decisions simply because I could, simply because there was…

I never thought I’d be able to experience a college level course in high school and pass it with an above average grade, more than a “C”. It wasn’t easy though, the journey I’ve made from semester to semester has been a slow one and required more than half my effort and time. I’ve definitely grown not only as a writer but as a student overall through completion of several term papers and activities. As I reflect on this school year, I am thankful for enrolling and for the experience SUPA History has given me. The materials and objectives of SUPA History has given me the confidence to feel capable of meeting college standards upon my arrival to a university.…

However, not everything was always peaches and cream. The good does come with the bad. Although I immensely relished learning psychology, I can say without a doubt what I least liked about my learning experience was all the stress that I felt. College is supposed to be no cakewalk, I know, but the stress certainly took me by surprise. I didn’t expect to have so much due in such a small period of time. For example, I recall near the end of the 3rd semester at community college I had three major papers due all within a few days of each other. Although I had completed most of the work for each paper, it still didn’t feel like I would complete them in time. It just didn’t feel like there were enough hours in the day to do everything that needed…

So far my community college experience has been the best I’ve ever had. I have enjoyed the freedom, my coursework, and all the new friends I’ve made. When I first started college, I wasn’t excited at all. I just knew that the work wasn’t going to be as difficult as a university and I basically saw the whole idea as a joke. After just a couple of short months at Florida State College of Jacksonville, I see now that everything I thought about the school was just a simple minded cliché. Not only is this the same environment as a university but they have the same type of activities as well. I have not a doubt in my mind that going to a junior college prior to attending a university will set me up for the utmost success.…
