Did you know that during the Cold War over twenty million people died? It was a pretty devastating war. While the reason it is called the “Cold War” is because it never sparked into an actual war, there was still a lot of war going on. I’m here to tell you about the what happened during the Cold War.
During the beginning of the Cold War (1947-1991), America devised a strategy called “containment” (“Cold War History”). Containment meant that they would try to stop communism from spreading to other places in the world. While trying to stop the spread of communism in the world, Russia tried to make a “Cold War” on the British Empire (“Cold War”). The first leader of the Soviet Union was Vladimir Lenin. Vladimir Lenin was the first leader of the Soviet Union and was the creator of the Soviet Union. The next leader of the Soviet Union was Joseph Stalin. Stalin ruled not with kindness, but with fear. He killed over 20 million people (“How Many Did Stalin Really Murder”). The last leader of the Soviet Union was Mikhail Gorbachev. Mikhail Gorbachev was the final leader of the Soviet Union, he tried to rebuild the economy after the drop of oil prices and the fall of earnings in foreign currency (“Cold War”).
Near the end of the Cold War, Richard Nixon, the newly elected U.S. president, began to to create an international relationship with Soviet Russia and he encouraged the United Nations to recognize the communist Chinese government. After that, Soviet Russia cut military spending a lot and focused more on reconstructing the economy, which left millions of people jobless.
