What Does Grit Mean To You Essay
Imagine that you are a new student at a new high school. You don’t know anyone, and you don’t know any of the teachers. Not one face on campus looks familiar. The material you learn is much harder than your old school and overall every day is miserable. Would you drop out? If your answer is no, you are a person that exemplifies grit. In the TEDTalk, "The key to success? Grit”, Angela Lee Duckworth states, "...One characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success. It wasn't social intelligence, it wasn't good looks, physical health, and it wasn't IQ: It was grit. What Duckworth is saying to me is that regardless of what talents and gifts you have the leading coefficient leading to success is grit. The amount of grit you have is the amount of fight you have in your heart towards your goals. Angela Lee Duckworth’s quote can relate to my life, the arts, and the world around me.
First, this idea of grit can be integrated into my life in various scenarios, one I would like to shine a light on is when I got cut from the 5th-grade basketball team. It was one of the first experiences I remember having to wake up and realize “woah, this isn’t being given to me, I need to work at this”. That year I contemplated whether

The amount of grit you have is the amount of fight you have in your heart towards your goals, this quote can relate to my life, the arts, and the world around me. Remember people like Miranda who just used grit to accomplish a childhood dream, or Lexi who lost her leg in a tragic accident and refuses to give up. If you don’t use grit, you're not committed, you're not a fighter, and lastly, you will never achieve your goals your heart

Grit is the strength of character and is seen differently by everybody such as how Dr. Duckworth sees it and myself. Dr. Duckworth states in her interview with “Ted Talk” that it’s how much passion a person has, how much stamina they have in achieving their long term goal. Unlike Dr. Duckworth I believe that a person’s mindset plays a major part in grit and I also believe you have to be optimistic and have the resilience to be a gritty person. Dr.Duckworth’s article on grit discusses the importance and the differences of grit.…

In the article, “The Winning Edge,” the author, Peter Doskoch, explains the reasons to persevere. When you start something, don’t stop until you reach success. Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” (Doskoch, Pg. 161, Paragraph 3). Being successful doesn’t pay off if it’s easy. Some will give up because “it’s too hard.” Isn’t that where the joy of success comes from? If it’s easy, it’s not worth it. You also have to realize that nobody is perfect, no matter how hard they try to be. “The Winning Edge,” tells us how there is always more room for improvement. We are all human, and it is natural for us to make a couple mistakes here and there. The important thing is that we learn from our mistakes. Another point that “The Winning Edge” points out is that we should all learn to like what we do. When we make a crappy mistake and take a wrong turn in our lives, make the most out of it. Doskoch mentions that “Perseverance...can itself foster…

Success is something that everyone aims to achieve, though it may mean different things to different people. The factors that contribute to success include hard work, endurance, and, according to Angela Duckworth, most of all, grit. Duckworth is a psychologist who defines grit as a combination of passion and perseverance (Duckworth 8). She believes this trait to be the most important, one that indicates the effort a person will put into their goals, how much they are willing to endure, and how successful they will be in achieving their goals (Duckworth 6). In her book, titled Grit, Duckworth discusses the trait in psychological terms, exploring how to measure grit in people and how it contributes to the success people experience.…

The first time I experience grit was when I first went skiing for my first time at Sundown, which is a ski resort near Dubuque. At first I did not like skiing, because I would always fall, but I was determined to be a good skier. By my second time at Sundown I started to get the hang of it. By my third night I could go down all the hills in a controlled manner, then I started to really enjoy skiing. I then found out if I keep on working and try my hardest on something it will always pay off in the end. Grit made me take something I dislike, and made it into one of my favorite things to do in the winter. Today I have been skiing for over 3 years. Even after I hurt my back skiing 2 years ago, I still went back the next year.…

When I hear the word grit I think of my brother. My brother had a state baseball tournament and ALL my family was there. 3 days after his baseball tournament my family was supposed to go to Omaha for a family vacation, instead, we took a trip down to Iowa City to the children's hospital. In July after Kalebś baseball game, I was on my way down to Centerville with my aunt and uncle. I wanted to spend time with my cousins and I could just go to Omaha with them. The day after I got to Centerville, my mom called my uncle and said that Kaleb was unresponsive and was in cardiac arrest, so the ambulance was taking him to the hospital. His temp was 104 and if he didn't get to the hospital quick he was going to die. After several tests, they FINALLY…

Hard work and perseverance is something a number of people are taught at a young age. Suzanne Lucas, a woman who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, has this to say about working hard, “Some people pat themselves on the back when they do as little work as possible. While this provides temporary fun, it won’t help towards real success.” No matter what someone’s job is, if they put in their hardest work…

A growth mindset and grit connect to each other in some sort of way. A person with a growth mindset can take up a challenge and not complain about it. The person wants to learn and overcome obstacles when faced with them. A growth mindset allows the person to think of the future and not just the moment. On the other hand, there is a fixed mindset. A fixed mindset isn’t a terrible thing, but it does set you back. A person with a fixed mindset will not take up challenges or face obstacles, they think about only now. Grit is similar to a growth mindset because it shows perseverance. Grit is how hard you can work and how long you can work this hard. Grit is the long-term goals that a person can set and still achieve. Gritty people focus on the future, just like growth mindset people. Both grit and a growth mindset aren’t based on talent, IQ or intelligence, its based on your work ethic.…
