Staph Infection: A Case Study
When I hear the word grit I think of my brother. My brother had a state baseball tournament and ALL my family was there. 3 days after his baseball tournament my family was supposed to go to Omaha for a family vacation, instead, we took a trip down to Iowa City to the children's hospital. In July after Kalebś baseball game, I was on my way down to Centerville with my aunt and uncle. I wanted to spend time with my cousins and I could just go to Omaha with them. The day after I got to Centerville, my mom called my uncle and said that Kaleb was unresponsive and was in cardiac arrest, so the ambulance was taking him to the hospital. His temp was 104 and if he didn't get to the hospital quick he was going to die. After several tests, they FINALLY …show more content…
He had staph infection in his ankle which then transformed into a very rare flesh eating disease called Necrotizing Fasciitis. The infection was spreading quick and they needed to get it out of his blood stream as soon as possible. The doctors came in and were telling my mom about how deadly this infection actually was. Kaleb then came to realization that if the doctors didn't do the best they could to get all the infection out he was going to die. My brother was in the hospital for a month and a half. After 5 very long and obviously super painful surgeries, the doctors were able to get all the infection out. The cut on his ankle when he first got to the hospital it was just a small little cut, by the end of all his surgeries, his ankle was gashed open into an L shape. During his stay at the hospital, the Iowa Hawkeye football players came to visit him. I wasn't there at that point but my mom took lots of pictures of it. Kaleb also, got to play wheelchair basketball and do all sorts of cool things in the hospital game room. After being in the hospital for a little over a month, he started to realize that he might not be able to play sports

To understand Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, we must first understand Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus is a spherical, or coccus, bacteria (MRSA). The bacteria usually appears is chains, bunches, or grape like clusters, (Gregory, 229). It is a gram-positive aerobic organism that causes skin infections and sometimes pneumonia, endocarditis and osteomyelitis (Beers, 1442). This infection commonly leads to abscess formations (Beers, 1442). Staphylococcus aureus is a coagulase positive bacterium, and is among those that are dangerous human pathogen because it has the ability to both be extremely virulent and its ability to develop antibiotic resistance, (Beers, 1442).…

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was first discovered in the 1880s and is a dangerous and versatile pathogen that causes many types of severe diseases. Most commonly it causes skin infections, respiratory tract infections, and food poisoning. In the 1940s, when the antibiotic medications such as penicillin was discovered and introduced, it became a primary treatment for S. aureus infections. However, misusing and overusing the use of antibiotics caused the evolution of these bacteria to become resistant to drugs that were designed to combat these infections. Throughout 1950s, S. aureus became resistant to penicillin, so methicillin was introduced to counter the growing populations of penicillin-resistant S. aureus. In 1961, the first strains of S. aureus bacteria became resistant to methicillin and so the methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was born. Since methicillin is a form of penicillin, the MRSA are resistant to an entire class of penicillin-like antibiotics called beta-lactams. S. aureus continues to evolve and have shown more resistance to additional antibiotic drugs over time (NIH, 2008).…

The ER waiting room smelled stale. Sick babies and toddlers were crying, waiting to see a doctor. My brother was laying on the tan tiled hospital floor. He was shaking terribly as the antibiotics from the previous hospital wore off and the infection set in more. Both of his hands were red and swollen. His right hand, had a black mark from where the IV initially infected. His left hand was swollen to the size of a small balloon, kind of like a blown up rubber glove I used to get from the doctor when I was younger. My mom took her jacket off to cover him. His skin was hot to the touch but he was still freezing. His fever was 101.2 but there were no open rooms in the ER at our second attempt at a hospital. We had to get him antibiotics…

The first time I experience grit was when I first went skiing for my first time at Sundown, which is a ski resort near Dubuque. At first I did not like skiing, because I would always fall, but I was determined to be a good skier. By my second time at Sundown I started to get the hang of it. By my third night I could go down all the hills in a controlled manner, then I started to really enjoy skiing. I then found out if I keep on working and try my hardest on something it will always pay off in the end. Grit made me take something I dislike, and made it into one of my favorite things to do in the winter. Today I have been skiing for over 3 years. Even after I hurt my back skiing 2 years ago, I still went back the next year.…

The story I told my partner was about a volleyball game. We were playing the Escanaba High School Varsity team. We were leading the first match 20-24 and ended up losing 26-24. Our coach was extremely disappointed in us. However, we pulled ourselves together and fought to win the next three sets. Each set was as close ass the last but we worked through everything. We played hard and left every play we had on the court. We ended up winning the game.…

Staph is a common germ that about 1 out of every 3 people have on their skin (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). Healthcare acquired, or nosocomial, Staph infections are common in surgery patients because the patient has had an open incision. Non-healthcare acquired Staph infections can come from a simple cut that has not been properly cared for. One example in which took a lot of perseverance from my father is when he moved all the way from California to Kansas. My father had to change houses and have a new community to live in. It was hard, but he tried to stay strong with all the new challenges/ struggles coming his way. His everyday life had just completely changed. In addition to the first example, my father had to go to a new school. This was a very hard thing to change schools and took a lot of confidence. My father had witnessed many things at his new school. His everyday life had changed, but with his opened minded and social qualities he knew he could get through it. Eventually, his new school taught him that change isn't always so bad. Another thing to remember and example of perseverance is that my father had trouble making new friends. To make more friends, my father had joined a basketball team where he could get out and be active. Also, he tried being as talkative as possible. This happened in 3rd grade, my father was obviously young, so he thought he couldn't make any new friends. Furthermore, you can see that my father went through a tough time and had to make many changes in order to persevere in his…

How could he not want me to take him to the doctor? He is mental. The next day he started to act odd, he was randomly coughing up this white looking ooze, but not mucus. Even though I am considered a skilled and impressive player, the game I love is all about failure. Players that fail seventy percent of the time are considered to be the best in the world. So this is where I developed the skill of mental toughness that I apply in life and baseball. In the summer of 2016, my high school baseball team made it to the state playoffs where the top teams played. College coaches were at the games along with hundreds of other fans. In our semi-final game, we were winning three-to-two…
