What Are The Similarities Between Araby And A & P
Nicholas Farnsworth
Essay 1

The story of “Araby” by Joyce and the story “A&P” by Updike share many characterizations that support a very similar theme. Both stories use the workers at the two stores as the back-drop for the main characters. In both stories the main characters do not want to be anything like their coworkers. The main character in “Araby” feels very disconnected and distant from his friends and co-workers. He also begins to have a crush on Mangan’s sister which only further detaches him emotionally from his friends. The same thing happens in “A&P” with the main character. Some young girls come into the store and he begins to form a crush on one of them. He gets very upset with Lengal for the way he treats the girls.

John Updike’s “A&P” is a story of a young boy Sammy, a cashier at A&P supermarket who allows his romantic desires and his anger overcome him and in the end winds up quitting his job. John Updike shows how Sammy goes from an immature young boy with lots of imaginary ideas and fantasies, to a young man who about to realize how life altering the choices he makes can be. Updike teaches us that actions and decision that we make in life have consequences and that either we like it or not we are responsible for our own actions. Sammy is simply an immature young man, not a person of principle. Sammy’s immaturity can be seen through his reactions, interaction and attitudes toward its customers, the three girls visiting the store, the “A&P” establishment, and the staff. The immaturity led him to quit his job as a cashier without thinking it through or realize the consequence.…

Between the two stories, you could find a bunch of examples of how they are similar, but one of the more distinct ones is the fact that both stories are told from a first person point of view. In our first story Araby, it is told from the young boy’s point of view. Although nothing is said much about the little boy himself, we can tell from his point of view that he has a very big crush on his friend’s older sister. We also see from his point of view that he lives with an unappreciative uncle and a concerning aunt. From our other story A&P; we go into the life of Sammy. In his point of view, we find out that Sammy is a store clerk for a small-town A&P store down in Georgia. He obviously isn’t excited about his job, but when three teenage girls wearing nothing but bikinis on a random hot summer day, he takes notice. In the end, when his manager comes out and ridicules the girls for coming into the store looking indecent, Sammy decides to quit his job in order to defend the ladies thinking that they would commend him for his efforts. Sadly his actions go unnoticed and that’s when we all realize that life from there on will be harder for him.…

“A & P” is a short fictional story by John Updike about the three girls who walks in A&P, a grocery store, outfitted in a bathing suit. The stories illustrate about the reaction and assumption of the people in the store, and later Legel, the manager forced the girls to get out of the store for their inappropriate appearance. The narrator, Sammy, and then stand up for the unfair behavior done toward the girls and happen to quit his job at the end of the story. After analyzing the story I came to an extend that writer is trying to give us an idea about the discrimination in gender, improper utilization of the power, lack of behavior and judgment in that time of period.…

Some of the things are that both of the authors talk about the same idea of a young boy’s growth for their adolescences. These boys need a lot more experience with the real world this comes with time, age and also experience. What is it like for Sammy to grow up with his parents and arbay to grow up with his aunt and uncle? In these essays what would you do if you were in the same situation as these boys? How do these boys need to grow up and mature? Or do you think that their actions might be a little overboard…
