The Appalachian culture is at risk for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, these risk factors will not decline quickly. Primary prevention and health awareness programs would make a huge impact on this population. Low income is a struggle that will not be overcome easily. However, primary prevention and health awareness are often available at low cost and are highly efficient measures of decreasing risk factors by focusing on healthy lifestyles. Smoking cessation would obviously be of major importance, but compliance would be of great struggle (Kruger et al.,…

The rise in prevalence of chronic conditions is a tricky situation to get a handle on because these conditions have no cure, though they can be treated. Chronic conditions play a major role in health as 7 out of 10 deaths each year are linked to these conditions and is much more prevalent for minorities and poor. Prevention is possible, but it requires a lot of effort and management and a health lifestyle, which can be expensive and not easily attainable. Income is a major factor into whether someone will have access to proper health care and health services. Without…
The two risk factors I chose that can be influential in someone’s life are conflicts and alienation factors: isolation, emptiness because I had been through these risk factors and I use alcohol as a way to escape reality. Once in a while, I’ll feel lonely and experiences conflict in life, so I’ll drink a little and after that I’ll feel a little better of myself. I think these risk factors can influent one to resolved conflict with others or themselves and find a way of getting out the feelings of aloneness or…

African Americans have a higher rate of illness than the dominant race in America. This racial group has a higher rate of “heart disease, stroke, cancer, HIV/AIDS, asthma and diabetes, as well as a higher rate of infant mortality” (Gordy, 2011). This can be attributed to poor eating habits and not enough exercise which is exacerbated by the fact that a large percentage of African Americans in the United States live in low income neighborhoods. Low income neighborhoods generally have a shortage of grocery stores and are over populated with liquor stores.…
However, with heighten awareness and a continuous push to solve the problems, the U.S. could see some decrease within certain groups. Some of the vulnerable populations that should be paid close attention to include children, the economically disadvantaged, elderly, racial and ethnic minorities, the uninsured, the homeless, those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and those with other chronic health conditions, including severe mental illness. Some of these groups has experienced a decrease in numbers while others continue to grow. If a continuous effort is made at reducing disparities the U.S. can experience some positive numbers in certain…
Community health is usually focused on a specific geographic region. In this way, specific epidemiological data can be obtained, and a precise community “report card” (Harkness & DeMarco, 2012, p. 181) can be created. From there specific interventions, including measurable goals can be planned to address specific risks identified in the community.…
Ironically, great improvements in sanitation and medical care in recent centuries have been accompanied, not by equal improvements in overall health, but by increasing inequalities in health in developed countries. The release of the Black Report in 1980 brought health inequalities to the forefront of academic and policy debate with social factors surfacing as among the most powerful determinants of health[1-2]. These social factors include social status, childhood experience, stress and anxiety, and social relationships among others. To explain how these social factors might lead to health inequalities, two prominent theories have emerged: the behavioral/cultural and the socio-structural approach. These approaches initially appear to be two sound theories fundamentally in opposition, with the former focusing on individual…
Health starts in our homes, workplaces, schools and communities. Most of us may think that the state of health is determined by our own behaviors and we are taking the initiatives in taking care of ourselves. By having a balanced diet, getting enough rest, exercising, not taking alcohols and smoking, receiving recommendation of preventive vaccine injection and screening tests, and seeing a doctor when we are sick, these behaviors all have great impact on our health. However, social determinants which are mostly responsible for health inequalities are also involved in influencing our state of health partly.…
The behavioral risk factors consist of tobacco use, narcotics use, stimulant prescriptions, and tranquilizer use. An environmental risk factor is the high number of homes built prior to 1978, that could potentially expose individuals to lead. Looking at the health risk factors in this population, it is well documented that persons of color, especially African-Americans are at greater risk for poor health outcomes, which is due to experiences with discrimination, lack of access to quality health care, lower educational and employment opportunities, and poor housing and work conditions that still continue as of today (Maine CDC, 2016).…

There are certain hazards out there that without considering social, economic, and political factors, a person will be without access to certain needs to protect them from these hazards. The four categories of human environmental hazards are cultural hazards, biological hazards, physical hazards and chemical hazards. Cultural hazards come from people that take risks and don’t think about the consequences until it’s too late. A few types of cultural hazards include, smoking, drinking, wreck less driving, criminal activities and consuming too much food. All of these examples can be prevented but, are things that people do on a consistent basis. Although, these activities can be controlled, a lot of times, these things are brought on by peer pressure and/or the people that you are around.…
