What Are Gucci's Arguments Against The Female Model?
In this Gucci advert we can see how the male model is standing over the female model in a physically dominant position as he stands upright over the female model it suggests that he is the more powerful figure in the image. The camera angle also shoots him from a lower angle making him appear ostentatious while the female model is portrayed as the weaker one of the two because of the fact that she is lower and in a submissive pose. The male model comes across as the sexual lead, and the female model seems to be anticipating his every move. This advertisement triggers another idea whereby females have been misled to believe that life is unsatisfactory without a male present, it also projects the impression that women are nothing but sexual objects merely placed on earth to serve men. what identifies her as a sexual object is her nakedness, even though her breasts are not shown, they are subliminally exposed to the man. All these different factors are used convince society on what it is to be a woman. Women are seen this way due to the sexually oriented representations of women in advertising and media, women being portrayed as weak or submissive through media such as advertising, men brazenly evaluating or judging women sexually or aesthetically in public spaces and events, such as beauty contests, and the presumed need for cosmetic surgery.     An advertiser’s main goal is to make money by any means necessary. Therefore, it is no surprise that advertisements in the media today are preying upon young women’s insecurities and producing more and more advertisements that show how sex sells in the media. Throughout virtually any magazine or image in the media, a reader will find more women than men shown in the advertisements. Some of these advertisements include women interacting with men in a sexual manner, women wearing the slightest bit of clothing, if any, and women posing in provocative ways to sell a certain product.     Very often we see women depicted in advertisements wearing very little and trying to seduce the men even though their target market is women. What is the purpose of targeting men with beautiful women, when you are not trying to sell them anything? Simple, it creates an image of what you are supposed to look like to be attractive to a man. Victoria Secret’s commercials constantly do this with women who come out strutting down the runway with one of those looks that says you “Feast on me, I’m here to be looked at, my body is for your eyes.” (Bordo 191) Bordo uses this quote as she describes the young man in the Calvin Klein ad who without being forward about it portrays an image of sexuality.     The woman is surrounded by four men of various stages of undress. She is being held down forcefully by her wrists by one of the men as the remaining three look on almost supportively. The men connote power and dominance shown by them all being in positions of power standing over the woman and pinning her down. The woman is dressed in only lingerie and stilettos. She is made to look very glossy and has a blank, absent expressions giving the appearance of a doll. This portrays her as an object of sexual desire and is immediately objectifying and dehumanising her. The scene is set in a dream like setting with blue skies and fluffy clouds painting a seemingly idyllic fantasy setting. Dolce and Gabbana have issued statements saying that the advertisement represents “an erotic dream, a sexual game” however it is clear that the woman is not an active or willing player.
