Western Motivation
University so far has been turning me into a robot. I’ve been conditioned to complete task after task and pass exam after exam and solely focus my attention on schooling. The thing is, I’m not trying to get an education to be able to work like a machine, I’m just trying to learn and gain knowledge to get where I want to be professionally. Sure, attending NYU has taught me a lot and pushed me academically, but I’d like to be able to power down once in a while, or at least get out of the ‘study’ setting I’ve been stuck in for nearly two years. I feel that Western would be a better fit to help me do that, and allow my focus to shift more to my future after my education and regaining a life outside of schoolwork. Academics have always been important and a …show more content…
I started volunteering as a partner for Special Olympics several years ago, partly because my family had been involved in caring for people with special needs all my life. Participating in sports with the athletes is very enriching because while volunteers do help quite a bit, it’s incredibly rewarding to help put smiles on the athletes faces and doesn’t feel like work at all.
Another motivation for me to apply for Western is family. Moving to New York was a great opportunity for me to gain new experiences and further my academics, but it also completely separated me from my family. Being thousands of miles from all the people I care about has been a challenge for me and one of the toughest aspects of going to NYU. Attending Western would be ideal because it would allow me to continue my degree as well as give me more opportunity to be with family.
Truth be told, I’m still not completely set on what I want to do for the rest of my life, but realistically, what nineteen-year-old is? I do know my strengths and values, however, so keeping those in mind and taking opportunities that will help me succeed is all I can really do to get myself

During my high school years approximately around my sophomore/ junior year my basketball team including I myself attended the Hoops for Haiti fundraiser that Meredith Elementary school hosted. Hoops for Haiti helps aid the disaster relief fund that is held in Haiti. Hundreds of elementary school children paid $5 each for a chance to play with not only Neumann-Goretti’s women’s basketball team but also the men’s team too. All proceeds were meant to go directly to rebuild and fund schools in Haiti. I decided to talk about this specific service that I participated in because not only was it fun but I got to interact with kids younger than me and was able to put smiles on their faces, those who were there and hopefully those in Haiti knowing that they do have people who care and want to help them out in every way possible.…

My reason for wanting to attend Webber International University is because of the it's marketing degree offered, the degree acceptance in my home country of Germany, and it's quiet location. I am working on receiving a bachelors degree in marketing and I have worked extremely hard so far. The reason I want to leave my current university is because the classes are to large, certain classes are difficult to sign up for because there are to many students and not enough professors, resources for academic success are limited by 2 hours a week, and life around campus is expensive and loud.…

I have been a volunteer with the local Special Olympics program for a little over a year now, and it has truly been one of the best experiences. I love being able to support and motivate the athletes to do their best and to just have fun being active. Special Olympics has also lead me to other opportunities I would not have known about before volunteering. For example, I recently applied to help volunteer at the Miss Amazing program in Sioux Falls coming up in a couple of months. Spread the Word to End the Word was also a local program I was able to be a part of thanks to Special Olympics.…

According to the rules of participation in the Special Olympics, the athlete must be eight years old in order to participate (Special Olympics, 2016). Through this initiative, children ages 2-7 are being prepared and trained for competitions as well as life skills (Holder, 2015). This program is used to help the young children to acclimate to the environment of motor and skill development. Launched in 2005 in eleven countries and nine states in the US, young athletes is a relatively new initiative(Special Olympics, 2016).Most of the Young Athletes programs are school based programs in typical public schools, specialized schools disabilities, or Head Start Programs and occur 1-2 times per week for 30 minutes increments (Holder, 2015). There are usually 3-9 children with 1-4 adults within each classroom (Holder, 2015). The classes are based on various skills such as jumping, marching, maintaining balance, and many other basic motor development skills (Kinet, 2015). Although this is a program for young children, the families also benefit greatly from this initiative. They learn how to interact with their child in new ways that promotes healthy growth and development. In the United States, most parents expressed that the program met or exceeded their goals for their child and that they will continue the program (Holder, 2015). Western culture and policies have shaped the modern world, especially the Middle East, in many ways. Since the sixteenth century, the nations of Western civilization have been the driving wheels of modernization. Globalization is simply the spread of modern institutions and ideas from one high power to the wider world. Technological innovation and economic growth along with such concepts as democracy, individualism, and the rule of law administered by an impartial judiciary, set Western societies above and beyond any possible rival. Other cultures looked to the West as a model, a threat, or some combination of both. One country that was most successful in their confrontations with Western states was Japan, who incorporated Western technologies and institutional arrangements into their own systems. This idea of mimicking the Western system can be used by other regions, such as the Middle East, to provide a foundation of government.…

Over the weekend of November 5-6, myself and some fellow LEADStrong leaders had volunteer our weekend at the Villanova 28th Annual Special Olympics. The reason why I’ve chosen to do this as my service project because ever since I was high school I’ve always loving to arrive onto campus on cold early morning seeing all the smiling faces of everyone involved with the whole event just puts me a better mood because in the beginning it can be overwhelming. However, once the first hour passes you can’t help to feel like you are a part of something great that words cannot describe how fun this weekend truly is. While spending my service hours at the Special Olympics some of the jobs that was covered the course of the weekend included: proving the…

Realization. This is what I learned from the readings. The realization that I am not as culturally aware as I thought. I have always considered myself to be a good nurse. I try to be very thoughtful and caring with my patients. I smile as I interview them, place my hand on their arm or shoulder, and try to find a common ground. This is because as an operating room nurse we don 't get long to connect with our patients before they are off to sleep. Working in central and eastern Kentucky and also growing up here, most of my patients are what I call "Appalachian Americans".…
