Genetically modified organism (GMO) is a man-made organism created in a laboratory and patented by The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA.) GMOs are created by a process called genetic engineering techniques. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecules from different sources are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes. Genetically modified organism (GMO) is created when a gene from a totally unrelated species is shot into the genetic material of another species. Any time you eat non-organic food, there is a 70 percent chance you are ingesting genetically modified organisms (GMO’s). Examples of Genetically modified organism (GMO) are: Rat and human genes in trout, Spider genes in goats, Human genes in corn or rice and Mouse and human genes in potatoes.

One will not be able to find the GMO on the labels of foods in a grocery store because it s confidential information and producers are not required to inform the consumer because the Federal government has declared it their choice to determine what is good for you and what foods are safe for your consumption.
Some examples of processed foods we consume that are made with genetically modified organisms are: Popcorn, baby formula, soy Sauce, frozen Pizza, canned soups, dry cereal and frozen dinners, (F, Edward, Dr, 2009).

Genetically modified organism (GMO) is not safe for any age group, we consume them because they are delicious to the taste, easy to get and prepared for a meal. As far as research shows, genetically modified organism (GMO) are genetically modified foods that affect the human physiology. Study of people in the Philippines reported that their bodies developed antibodies to Bt toxin. The US Food and Drug Administration had data dating back to early 1990s that rats fed GM tomatoes had developed small holes in their stomach, (Haffegee, Julian, 2009).     Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)/Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of food crops or animals. There are many arguments both in favor of and against mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods. Whether or not to require labeling of GMOs or GE foods also involves the debate over the risks and benefits of food crops produced using biotechnology. However, the overarching argument is consumers have a right to know what is in their food, especially concerning products that can cause allergic reactions. According to the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, Genetically Modified (GM) foods are linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals (http://www.responsibletechnology.org). Because there is no scientific evidence that GMO/GE foods do or do not cause health issues in humans (because there have been no long-term studies), consumers may or may not be being harmed by GMOs. However, the safety of GMOs has been questioned by other countries. In fact, they are banned by food manufacturers in Europe and other countries, but, present in the majority of meats, produce, diary and processed foods in the United States (US). Many consumers in the US have no knowledge that they are consuming GMOs. If they did, it is now known if, similar to Europe, many would prefer to not consume GMO/GE foods. However, without proper labeling, the big issue of concern is, they do not know how to avoid them if they wanted to.…

    In the United States 75% of the grocery stores shelves are full of food products containing one or more genetically modified ingredients. Genetic modification is the technology that allows genetic food to be created. This technology allows specific genes to insert or change in living organisms. I believe that these genetically modified foods are not harmful to humans in short-term but possibly in a long-term, this is a possibility of getting cancer from the alterations of the organisms. These foods being processed help them last longer in the consumers fridge or counter. This also speeds up the process of food of being produced for consumers and also may keep cost reduced for the manufacturer. Also another statement from Miller and Conko "Six percent to eight percent of children and 1 to 2 percent of adults are allergic to one or another food allergens.
