Welcome Table
The theme in a story is associated with an idea that lies behind the story. Every story narrows a broad underlying idea, shapes it in a unique way, and makes the underlying idea concrete. That's how theme is created. In other words, the theme in a story is a representation of the idea behind the story. (Clugston, 2010) This paper will compare and contrast the theme of the stories Country Lovers by Nadine Gordimer and The Welcome Table by Alice Walker.
The first story which is Country Lovers which is about a boy named Paulus Eysendyck, who is a white farmer’s son, and Thebedi, the black daughter of one of the farm workers. As children, Paulus and Thebedi played together, but when they are teenagers they began a sexual relationship. They have tender feelings for each other, even though their relationship is ultimately doomed. They continue a relationship throughout the years when Paul comes home on visits.
Thebedi later marries Njabulo, a kind young black man who has loved her for years. Two months later, Thebedi gives birth to a light-skinned child. Although Thebedi is pregnant when she marries it is not considered scandalous because men in this culture often insist on finding out before marriage if their women are barren. The child’s light skin, however, reveals who the father really is. Although Njabulo knows the baby is not his, he treats the child as his own and buys things that the baby needs.
When Paulus comes to visit he learns that Thebedi has married and has a light-skinned child. He panics about the child and goes to visit Thebedi. When he sees the baby he knows that it is his because it had “his own hazel eyes”. He then asks her to give the baby to someone else to raise, "Don't take it out. Stay inside. Can't you take it away somewhere? You must give it to someone—" but she does not want to. Two days later, he goes back to Thebedi’s and ask to see the child again. Waiting outside the hut, Thebedi hears soft groaning sounds, and that night the baby

The theme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly. In the first part of the novel “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, the primary topic is courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear. The alternate topic is love triumphs over all. The primary reason for courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear is due to Rikki wasn’t scared for a long time when he saw Nag. The alternate reason for love triumphs over all is due to Rikki killed the snakes that tried to put the family to death and killed the eggs as well. In the exposition, we did learn that it’s is difficult for a snake to scare a mongoose. Let's see which theme is right.…

Sometimes, a specific story can include more than one theme. Take my choice of story for example. My story, “Flowers for Algernon,” has multiple themes that could fit with it. I believe the most appropriate theme for “Flowers for Algernon” is that too much of a good thing can end up being bad.…

Most all short story authors use one central idea, or theme, throughout their stories to make the story flow and influence the characters actions. In Dictionary of Literary Terms and Literary Theory, the theme of a work is defined as “… not its subject but its central idea which may be stated directly or indirectly” (Cuddon 969). Some themes might be difficult for a reader to recognize; however, because most themes are the author’s muse, or inspiration for the whole story, the reader can detect these themes immediately. Some authors, like the legendary William Faulkner, use a common theme throughout the majority of their short stories. Because of Faulkner’s experiences living in the Old South, he often compares the themes of the Old South to show the stark contrast of the new generation of Southerners and…

Nadine Gordimer’s Country Lovers is a story about Thebedi, a black girl, and Paulus, a white boy, who fell in love. Gordimer wrote the story from a third-person point of view. The point of view is objective; the characters’ thoughts are not exposed as in the omniscient point of view. The point of view allows the reader to concentrate on the characters’ actions, creating a more dramatic effect.…

One of the literary works that we have known so well is short story. The theme of a story is the idea behind the story. Every author begins writing a book, article, short story, or whatever because of an idea they had. Every story or piece of literature has a theme to it. The readers, however, may come to a conclusion about the theme that the author never meant. In Little Red Riding Hood, one might come to the conclusion that the theme is to portray the consequences of the loss of one’s virginity at an early age.…

At its basic level, literary criticism, like all criticism, reflects personal preferences and emotional responses. It's an activity that requires looking back on a reading experience just as you would look back on a journey you've completed and analyzing what you gained from it. Your experience is the central focus. You are the one initiating this process; you are the critic. After you have absorbed a piece of literature (i.e., been open to it), you can no longer be neutral: you will either like or not like it. You will have an emotional response to it, since emotions are stimulated to some extent in every literary experience. Beyond that, you may sense that what you have read has value and application outside your own experience: its insight or knowledge, perhaps, should be broadly considered. So, to generalize, literary criticism is an informed response a person makes to literature after openly (imaginatively) experiencing it.…

Thebedi married Njabulo when she was about eighteen years of age and two months later the baby was born. It was not a dishonor for a black woman to be pregnant before marriage; often times sexual relations occurred before marriage in order to assure the woman was able to have children. When the child was born it was evident that it was a mixed child, but Njabulo did not complain and went out and purchased diapers, clothes, and powder.…

The point of view of the story is from the third party omniscient. Which is as our textbook states it is an external narrator who uses the thoughts and feelings of the characters in an omniscient (all knowing) point of view (Clugston, 2010). The narrator describes all the feelings that Paulus has toward Thebedi which he does not understand because he should not be having these feelings for her it should be someone else since it is forbidden. They are friends and that is ok, but to become lovers is not. They are not considered equals she is a servant and he is the master. They still go on for years at a time and become very close in private not letting anyone know the way they feel for one…
