Wayne Gretzky Biography
Wayne Douglas Gretzky was born January 26, 1961 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. He began skating at just two years old and was playing with older boys by six years old. He spent extreme amounts of hours on the ice and scored 378 goals in his final year of peewee hockey. When he was a teenager he was chosen third in the 1977 Ontario Major Junior Hockey League Midget draft, and played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds where he was able to show his skills. He played for his home country in 1978, and led the entire tournament in scoring at the World Junior Championships that were hosted in Quebec City. In the fall of 1978, he signed with the Indianapolis Racers of the fledgling World Hockey Association.
In 1979-1980 he played his first full NHL

    Even after being selected Hextall returned to the Wheat Kings for two more years. In 82-83 Hextall had a 5.77 GAA in 44 games. In 1984 Hextall arrived at camp with high expectations of making the Flyers, but Hextall was sent to the affiliate team. Hextall was disappointed with being sent to the Kalamazoo Wings, but the knew he was playing tougher, faster, and more competitive hockey then before. Hextall work as hard as he could, and it paid off. The Flyers had him play 19 games with Kalamazoo before shipping him to the Hersey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL). A few years in Hersey, some hard work helped Hextall reach his a ultimate goal of the NHL. After a couple years in the NHL Hextall created a name for himself, Hextall wasn't afraid to fight. He would do anything to help his team capture a win. In 1987-88 Hextall made NHL history by becoming the first goalie to score a goal. He had shot the puck from his crease down the ice and into the open net. This task is very difficult to complete and he is one of few to do it.
