In our discussion on Friday, no one else read the book so I was stuck trying to piece together what they knew, what happened in the book, and how to write a decent report on what has happened so far. So far in the book, we read about Jacob living in the retirement home and coming in contact with a fellow who claims he carried water for elephants. Elderly Jacob flashes back to when he was twenty-three. His parents had just died in a car accident; he skipped out on his veterinarian final exam, and hops a train out of Norwich in hopes of finding work somewhere new. The train is for the “Benzini Brother’s Most Spectacular Show on Earth”. He joins the circus, does a variety of petty jobs until he lands in the circus…
Sarah Gruen’s Water for Elephants is an account of ninety-something year old Jacob Jankowski’s life, both in the present day, where he resides in a nursing home, unhappy with his living conditions and the old age that has robbed him of his freedom, and through flashbacks of when he was young, traveling with the circus. Just a few days away from getting his veterinary degree from Cornell University, Jacob’s mother and father were suddenly killed in an automobile accident, sending Jacob’s life spiraling out of control; with his parents’ debt having left him with no home and no money, he hops aboard a circus train for the “Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth,”…
Marta was raped at a young age, so she wants to have an abortion. As she talks about it, Calendario, her brother in-law promises her that he and Chayo would take care of her baby when he is born, for he has been promoted to the salad maker in town. But everything changes when Chayo and Calendario are blessed with a child that they thought they would never have. Since Chayo is about to have a baby of her own, she refuses to take care of Marta's baby. Marta’s dream is to go to El Paso. She goes to see Calendario and she finds out that her own sister did not want to take care of her child because she is having one of her own. So that is when the conflict person vs. person begins between Marta and Chayo. When Chayo finds out about her sister’s betrayal they do not speak for years. There are hard feelings going on between them throughout the story.…
More than once, August puts Joacobs life in danger. Wether it is forcing him to feed a toothless Lion as a prank or to walk across the roof of the train August shows very poor judgement when it comes to the safety of Jacob and his other workers. When he needs to, he can be the most generous person in the whole circus, temporariyly fooling Jacob…

The story begins in the summer of 1935 in Warsaw, Poland, where we are introduced to a young couple, Antonina and Jan Zabinski. Antonina and Jan were the directors of Warsaw’s lush, fecund zoo in which the animals not only inhabited cages, but in habitats (engineered by the couple) to recreate the animals’ natural habitats. Both Antonina and Jan’s backgrounds were far from the norm; Antonina being a Russian-born Pole whose parents were murdered by the Bolsheviks during the early stages of the Russian Revolution and Jan, born a Polish Catholic, but raised atheistically by his father in a working-class Jewish neighborhood. It was these unique and differing foundations that made the Zabinski household almost a madcap bohemia, constantly hosting artists and intellectuals, and not to mention a seemingly never ending rotation of non-human companions, ranging anywhere from muskrats to lion cubs (all of whom had names).…

This story begins in Moulmain, in lower Burma. The author speaks about his experiences while he was working as a police officer. In this time, Orwell was a young inexperienced soldier. He was in that place to protect the Queen’s interests. He had to do unethical things that made conflicts himself. When he mentions that he killed an elephant I feel his pangs of conscience. The elephant destroyed a village before it died. The villagers were furious about all the mess and Orwell was called to restore the order before anything, or anyone, was hurt. While this adventure runs, he decided to kill the animal because he thought that was the best. He needed to show solidarity among the villagers as a man of authority.…
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen is about an old man recounting his experiences in the circus. As an old man, Jacob Jankowski makes a decision to leave his nursing home and join the circus that has come to his town. After Jacob’s parents’ death during Jacob’s college exams, Jacob decides to leave college and hop on a train. He hops on a train that happens to be the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. He makes many friends in the circus and marries his love, Marlena. They start a family in the Ringling Brothers circus after the Benzini Brothers circus collapses. In the circus he gains family, friends, and tons of stories. When Jacob is in the Nursing home, his son, Simon, forgets to take Jacob to the circus. Jacob then decides to walk there himself from the nursing home. Jacob anticipates a joyful circus day and his forgetful son is not going to stop Jacob from enjoying that day. All Jacob wants to do is relive his adventurous past for a day, and when an opportunity to relive that adventure for the rest of his life is offered to him, Jacob takes it. The manager of the circus offers Jacob the opportunity to join the circus. Anyone would give up boring nursing home living for the circus. Jacob makes a good decision at the end of the novel because it is justified by his life now and his past experiences in the circus.…

On Wednesday--September 27, 1939--the Polish capital of Warsaw fell at the feet of the German armies. This ruined the lives of many people, including Jan, Antonina, and Rys Żabińska. Throughout the book, The Zookeeper’s Wife, the character that was the most interesting was Jan Żabińska. Jan played a colossal role in the Underground Resistance against the Germans. To fight against the Germans Jan would hide Jewish people in his zoo and house, make bombs and weapons, and would sneak people out of the Ghetto. Though most of his focus were on the war efforts, he never forgot to keep his family a priority in his life. Antonina, his wife, taught valuable lessons throughout the whole book by how she handled certain situations. Antonina, when confronted by German soldiers, responded in a calm manner. She was the maternal figure that looked out for the well-being of her loved ones and never gave up on her family.…
