Love plays one of the largest roles in William Goldman's The Princess Bride. This story presents love in many different forms. Some characters claim their love to be true for each other, for others this is not the case. The reason love is such a major theme is that it is what sparks the interesting events in the book. Actions such as revenge and dramatic rescues are all sparked through love. Therefore love is present in almost all aspects of The Princess Bride, and is seen is both minor and major characters.

Love is not just present in the main characters, but is very alive in the smaller characters as well. This love is most clear in the situation of Inigo Montoya and his father Domingo. Inigo loved his father so much, that when he was murdered, Inigo dedicated his whole life to

of Humperdinck who loves torture and the effects of torture on human beings. Theses characters love for abnormal hobbies are a crucial part in the story.

Finally there is true love. Princess Buttercup and Westly claim to be in true love. Their love is very believable for many reasons. On the reverse side, there is no doubt that Buttercup loves Westly. She states that they are "bonded through love" (245). In the story she often states that is she can not marry her one true love Westly, she will kill herself. This shows just how much she actually loves him; she would rather die then be without

Throughout history, the concept of fate has been a common theme among works of literature and man's thought in general. Does he have the ability to choose his path through life, or is his destiny laid out before him? This question takes on new meaning in modern society, as people try to make their own choices while conforming to the structure of society and its norms. While society, with its customs and laws, seems to limit a person's freedom, the person is still essentially free to make their own choices.…

Goldman alters the fairytale in order to meet the changing society by not making a clear happy ending. The way he ends The Princess Bride makes it more realistic to today’s society. Real life isn’t always a happy ending, sometimes the good guys don’t win and the hero doesn’t end up with the girl. In today’s society people don’t live in fairy tales anymore, they realize that life isn’t perfect and that's exactly what Goldman did in The Princess Bride. While The Princess Bride has a more realistic ending it still deals with sexism in the story. The princess still needs saving and is seen as this beautiful, useless damsel in distress. Although in this time period we are more about women empowerment, treating women fairly to men is still a huge…

Love is defined by dictionary.com as “an intense feeling of deep emotion.” Love is not something that should be forced, because of common interests, intelligence, or good weather. Love is much more natural, it is not an equation to be solved; it is an emotion to be felt. Who one decides to marry is one of, if not the biggest decision one has to make in his or her life, it should not be taken lightly. In Mavis Gallant’s short story, The Other Paris, Gallant mocks humanity’s modern day over analyzing of love through narrative voice and characterization to prove that love is not something that should be forced or solved, but something that should happen naturally on its own.…

Love is a theme that is expressed quite clearly in both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story. There is forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet, as well as between Tony and Maria. Both sets of characters come from completely different worlds, and because of rivalry and hatred they are not supposed to be together. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet is told that she has fallen in love with the son of her enemy, and Juliet’s response is “My only love sprung from my only hate,” (Act 1, Scene 5, Line 140). Juliet knows she should not love Romeo because of the hatred between their families. There is also expected or arranged love in both pieces of literature. Juliet is arranged to be married to Paris, and Maria is expected to marry Chino. When Anita finds out about Maria being in love with Tony, Anita tells her “Forget that boy and find another! One of your own kind – Stick to your own kind!” (Act 2, Scene 3, Page 212). She is telling Maria that because of the rivalry between the gangs, the racial difference, and because Tony has killed Maria’s brother Bernardo, she should not love Tony but Chino instead.…

One of the considerable differences between Buttercup and Westley is that they come from two different social groups. Typically in that time period, people of the upper class would marry someone of the same class rather than a working class individual. There are multiple settings being used in the film including: a glamorous castle, forest, sea, mountain, then a fire swamp. The locations helps to convey the story, as Buttercup demonstrates her ability to adapt to different environments where she is faced with challenges including battling eels, and large rodents (“The Princess”). Once Inigo Montoya, Vizzini, Fezzik, and Buttercup make it up the mountain, Inigo encounters a man wearing a black mask, who is an excellent fighter. It is later revealed that the man under the mask was Westley, and was fighting for Buttercup. A Shakespearean comedy typically includes characters with mistaken identities or disguises. Another event which often occurs in a Shakespearean comedy is when the social structure that existed before diminishes, and the lovers live together happily (Immerwahr). Buttercup always knew she wanted to marry Westley, and was determined to do so, even if it meant going against the wishes of the Prince. She listened to her heart and initial instincts rather than conforming to what others told her. Her perseverance was worthwhile as she ended up…

Romeo and Juliet is the most famous love story in the English literary tradition. Love is naturally the play's dominant and most important theme. The play focuses on romantic love, specifically the intense passion that springs up at first sight between Romeo and Juliet. In Romeo and Juliet, love is a violent, ecstatic, overpowering force that supersedes all other values, loyalties, and emotions. In the course of the play, the young lovers are driven to defy their entire social world: families ("Deny thy father and refuse thy name," Juliet asks, "Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, / And I'll no longer be a Capulet"); friends (Romeo abandons Mercutio and Benvolio after the feast in order to go to Juliet's garden); and ruler (Romeo returns to Verona for Juliet's sake after being exiled by the Prince on pain of death in II.i.76–78). Love is the overriding theme of the play, but a reader should always remember that Shakespeare is uninterested in portraying a prettied-up, dainty version of the emotion, the kind that bad poets write about, and whose bad poetry Romeo reads while pining for Rosaline. Love in Romeo and Juliet is a brutal, powerful emotion that captures individuals and catapults them against their world, and, at times, against themselves.…

There are infinite ways to define love. Love has become such an ambiguous and vague term, though it is one of the most recognizable of human emotions. It has existed as far back as humans remember and love has been a source of interest and inspiration in the Arts, Religion, Sciences, and most popularly, in Literature. The most memorable and popular work of love is William Shakespeare’s tragic Romeo & Juliet. What is so remarkable about this play is its bold exploration of different types of love. Traditionally, Romeo and Juliet’s love has been portrayed as ‘true’ but Shakespeare makes an effort to expose the vain love that exists in his Verona. Romeo and Juliet’s love is superficial; true love requires maturity, a foundation, and time; all of which are lacking in their romance.…
