Walgreens Reflection
After the entire experience of interviewing the fellow leadership of the Walgreens store, I had grown a new feel for the idea of how corporations work. I had learned history about their company, finding out that it wasn't always a retail store but instead was a pharmacy that had disrupted drugs, until the owner developed their own formula of making the drugs cheaper. Also, gained experience in how business are affected with tragic economic disasters, and how they are able to come back. One of my favorite thing about researching Walgreens was understanding the benefits to working for the company, making new friends, also advancing into new careers in the pharmaceutical field.

The film makes use of firsthand information from interviews conducted by Greenwald on individuals that have faced the impact of Wal-Mart’s reign. Since its establishment, Watson had promised customers and workers great services by offering goods at low prices. According to the film, Wal-Mart has established its retail business in local areas where large retailers are not available to avoid competition. As a result, they drew attention of many small community consumers because of their cheaper prices and variety of differentiated products. This has caused havoc to small business, which have been wiped out because they lack the potential to compete with this retail giant. At this point, I wonder what this company has to offer me. I have always known about Macy’s, but not in depth. My original research of the company’s history, background, and culture took me off guard from what I was expecting. Personally, as a single individual, I want to make an impact on the world, to make it a better place. I have the mentally that I would to make a difference, so at the level where I am at, all I can do is volunteer locally. I would love to be part of the Macy’s team. The Walgreens chain began in 1901, with a drug store on the corner of Bowen Ave and Cottage Grove, Chicago, Illinois, United States owned by Galesburg native Charles R. Walgreen, Sr.[6] By 1915, there were five Walgreen drugstores. He added several improvements to the stores such as soda fountains and luncheon service. He also began to make his own line of drug products and was then able to control the quality of the items and sell them at lower prices. By 1916, 19 stores were in operation, all in Chicago. And in that same year, all the stores were consolidated under Walgreen Co. The 1920s was a very successful decade for Walgreens. In 1921, the company opened stores outside of residential areas and also introduced the malted milk shake in 1922. Walgreens also established its very own ice cream manufacturing plants to match the demand for ice cream at that time. By the mid 1920s, there were about 65 stores with an annual sale of 1.2 million dollars. By this time, Walgreens had expanded into other states like Wisconsin, Missouri, and Minnesota. By 1930, there were 397 stores in 87 cities with annual sales of 4 million dollars. The company did not really suffer from the Stock Market Crash and Great Depression. By 1934, Walgreens was operating in 33 states with over 600 stores. After Charles Walgreen Sr. died, his son Charles R. Walgreen Jr. took over and ran the chain until his retirement. The Charles R. Walgreen Jr. years were relatively prosperous, but lacked the massive expansion seen in the early part of the company. Charles "Cork" R. Walgreen III took over after Jr's retirement in the early 1970s, and brought the company through many modern initiatives, including the switch to a computer inventory based system (bar code scanning). The Walgreen family was not involved in senior management of the company for a short period following Charles' retirement. In 1986, it acquired the MediMart chain from…

I have chosen Wal-Mart Stores Inc for my final paper topic selection they are also known as WMT on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) . I am intrigued with their success but also scared about how dependant I have become with my shopping at their stores. This store is not only a retail giant it is also retail bully that forces other stores to go out of business. Wal-Mart not only specializes in retail items such as clothing, jewelry, lawn, and garden they also have super stores that specialize in pharmacy, groceries, auto repair, and check cashing in addition to the services mentioned above. The only other store that has similar retail items and services is Super K Mart which has seriously declined in retail status over the past 10 years. Wal-Mart offers many services and has found a way not only to be competitive but to be dominate when it comes to cost savings. Their product lines are name brand in most cases and are offered at below retail prices on a regular basis which most stores in their competition range can't compete with. These stores are easily accessible in rural and urban city settings, Wal-Mart has 8,970 stores across the world. This global giant is currently the biggest private employer across the world employing over 2 million people world wide and still growing. This store has a great impact on the US economy it helps boost US consumer spending habits and helps the employment rate. I can’t think of another privately owned company that has this big of an impact on the economy. There are a lot complaints about the low pay rates the company offers to its employees but Wal-Mart is offering jobs when other industries and companies are laying off and putting hiring freezes on new positions. These job opportunities may not pay well but it’s most definitely an alternative to being unemployed with no income. Overall Wal-Mart is a solid company that has a broad business portfolio in investments, social responsibility, and ethics which for the most part…

Before starting my college education, I worked for over 6 years at Mitchell & Ness, a multi-million dollar retail clothing company and store in Philadelphia, extensively in their inventory department. I spent time during the year working with our various warehouse managers to investigate the root cause of inventory adjustments. Working in a position that required attention to detail further taught me ways to improve my problem-solving skills and give me a change to work independently as well as in a team environment. Being able to grow with that company from working on their retail sales floor to their corporate office gave me a full view of the company’s day to day operations and gave me a better perspective on work.…
