The style of this painting is abstract with simplified and exaggerated aspects. The water and sailboats have all been simplified. The boats that are closer to the front of the painting have been exaggerated more than the others in the distance. In book twelve, the picture, and the poem about thee sirens are different and alike in many ways. The sirens can be described as noisy, irritating, and unusual. Ulysses and The Sirens by John Williams Waterhouse shows the mythical creatures who in the painting have forced odysseus crew members to tie him to the ship post in order to make him listen to the song the Sirens were singing. The mood of the painting can be described as menacing, which demonstrates the idea that the painting gives off a frightening feeling. Sights such as the sirens prove this to be true, The painting shows the crew members on the on the boat who continues on rowing show that humans are naturally self centered creatures who fight to keep themselves safe even if it means putting others in…

Next there is the con artist who posed as a bible sales man to rob Ulysses; the con artist is compared to the Cyclops from The Odyssey. At first it does not seem that a con artist and a Cyclops would have too much in common, but he coincidently had only one eye, and if that was not enough he also used a club to attack Ulysses just as the Cyclops had a club he used in The Odyssey. On a deeper level the con artist and the Cyclops serve the same purpose to both stories, which is to prevent Ulysses/ Odysseus from getting home to his wife. Then there are the 3 women who were washing their cloths in the river. These obviously were the writer's interpretation of the sirens from The Odyssey. And as in The Odyssey they attempted to prevent Ulysses from getting home, and also tempted him with lust, just as the sirens did. There is also the part in the movie where Ulysses and his companions came upon a KKK ceremony and lynching. The KKK represented the Laestrygonians from The Odyssey. This is because in both The Odyssey and O Bother Where Art Thou the Laestrygonians and the KKK were unexpected, and violent. Unexpected because in The Odyssey Odysseus did not expect to run into human eating giants, and for…

There's always that one thing that people can't resist no matter how hard they try. Within these two stories, the thing the people are trying to resist are the sirens. With Homer's "The Both Homer and Atwood portray the Sirens in a similar manner. Their mutually unique methods share a common tone towards their subjects. Both authors portray to the readers the sirens as deceptive and flattering. Homer tells his story in the first person through the eyes of Odysseus. His portrayal of the Sirens is thus subjected to the views of Odysseus character. Homer shows the nature of the Sirens through their song. This painting had some arrangements for objects and subjects. The use of perspective could be seen at the six corners of the panel, lines that served as the indication of space. The tone of the wall's colors changed to indicate light and shadow. Human figures were positioned one in front another to suggest they were in a three-dimensional space. The positions of Christ and Virgin Mary were arranged in great similarity, both of their body slanting and formed two diagonal lines in the…

I found Cross’ painting to be different because it stood out to me. I believe it to be the style of texture that caught my eye. I am a big fan of natural surroundings; how other people view and the interpretation of it. The way Cross just knows where to put color and how to capture the sun light in the right area. I see that he even brings out the sun light’s brightness reflecting off this small building. I am not sure why he chose to make it so bright that you can barely recognize that image. It seems he wanted the natural light be a big focus in this painting yet, he is still able to include the beauty of the greenery of the area. Another feature of the piece was the stone driveway and stone hedge along the house. I feel like he took his time to place the right color dash to give a bright but yet natural look. Finally there are the flowers, I believe Cross’ painting would have been just as beautiful without them but, Cross adds just the amount without taking away from the rest of the landscape. To me Cross brought a little of each characteristic. The texture Cross uses makes me want to rub my fingers across the painting…
