Volunteering Community Service
Volunteering and providing services to the community in which I reside is extremely imperative to me, because of this I take as many opportunities as I can to help out. Of all of the hours I have spent volunteering, one service in particular stands out the most. A few years ago I was invited to volunteer at my town's local nursing home, I was skeptical at first, but I proceeded to accept the offer anyway. The date arrived, my group and myself entered the nursing home where we were welcomed with warm, kind smiles from all around. No one expected this, and from that moment on I knew that day would hold a special place in my heart. Both employees and residents seemed beyond gracious and thankful to have us there, and because of this, we all felt …show more content…
Each had a unique story to tell, some were in shock that they had a visitor after spending almost their entire stay alone, and some were too tired or sick to speak, so they held your hand instead. The entire day was full of emotions, especially for myself. I found myself feeling both happy and sad, for I knew it made these people’s day that we were there, but how could a generation who worked so hard to provide end up alone? I tried to conquer these overwhelming emotions and persevere throughout the day. I encountered several more residents, all of whom were ecstatic to have my company. I listened to what they had to say, and I believe that I grew as a person based on the many life stories I was able to listen to that day. They all had a life lesson, stories of their childhood, crazy tales of their teenage years, and many stories about their family. Since that day I have put to use as many as the lessons these people taught me as possible, and my outlook on life is now much different. I try to visit the nursing home often, however many of those whom I developed a close relationship with in a mere few hours are no longer there, which brings to me a great sadness. I now cherish time with those I love much more, and I can only hope to be as influential and wise and those people were one

For my service this year, I was involved with Applecross Opal Nursing Home. Opal age care was a great help to me in opening my eyes to the desperate need for an extra pair of hands and the importance of nursing homes. Not only to the individual admitted in, but also to their families and friends. As I would arrive at 12.00 every time, I would go straight into lending a hand with lunch. Handing out the meals, packing away, cleaning up and keeping an eye on a few of the residents was my first job done. Then I would wonder through the compound talking to the residents, playing and colouring in with them and I would gather and assist them to and from their rooms. With all these jobs, you had to keep a look out for and take extra care with some of the more dependant residents.…

I am an active member of a service organization called Key Club. One day during Key Club week is Random Acts of Kindness Day. My goal was to start implementing this in my everyday life. On a daily basis, we can be selfish to the needs of others without even realizing it. Everything was put in perspective for me when one afternoon I stopped by the Dollar Tree to pick up some supplies. It was the cashiers birthday and she was turning 74. We wished her a happy birthday and she explained how her family had not planned anything for her birthday. After we left we decided that we should go ask her if she would like to go out to eat and we’d sing her happy birthday. She said she couldn’t because her husband would be waiting for her. So we sang for…

I cut the grass for some of my family because they asked me to cut it for them. I did it for my Aunt Gwen and my Grandma Hill. I enjoy my time with my Aunt and I was working together with my brother and my cousin and we had a great time over at my Aunt’s house. And at my Grandma's house we had a great time over there. I got to see my baby cousin and I haven’t seen here in a long time. I would do this again anytime because it was fun and if they ask me to. I picked this to do because they asked me to do it for them. This experience made me realize that family matters and to never let them go. It changed me making me a better person and making myself more available to family’s need. This helped someone else and it help the community…

I remember when I was younger I had to go visit the doctor for all my sport related injuries. The doctors always put your best effort into making me feel better and I was resort I was so indebted to them, even though my insurance paid them for their services I was morally indebted to them because of their kind efforts. As a result, during the summer of 2012 I began volunteering at the Lower Keys Medical Center. I felt it was important to help the nurses and the intensive care unit because of all of the duties they have on their plate, they should not be held responsible for all the minor ones. I continued to volunteer at the Lower Keys Medical Center throughout my second third and fourth year of high school because I truly Felt like I was making a difference in these patients lives.…

Every Sunday I spend time with the residents of Rosewood Assisted Living, which is a nursing home that specializes in Alzheimer’s disease. I work in the memory care center which is where patients go when they can no longer remember things as simple as there name. It takes patience and some one who excels in kindness to work with them. Some days are harder than others yet I’m never discouraged from returning, because I know that I’m one of the only people who will talk and play three hours of bingo with them. It also give me experience working with mentally ill people. Because one day I hope to become a Pharmaceutical scientist or a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative.…

Hunger has always been a serious issue and still is today. Many people experience food insecurity and feel shameful when going to food pantries or seeking assistance. We can reduce the negative stigma associated with food pantries in numerous ways. First spreading awareness of the need for food pantries will help change the stigma as people realize that the need is real. Then educating the public on the number of people in need of the food pantries because of their struggle with food insecurity will show how prevalent the need has become. Most of all volunteering in food pantries is a firsthand way to get involved and reduce the negative feeling associated with the need for assistance. These few things will be a great start in reducing the…

I am spending my time volunteering at St. Marks United Methodist Church (St. Marks UMC). This church is an open community, working to create a comfortable atmosphere for anyone and everyone in and around the area. I work specifically with the youth of the church and I reach out to students who are my age or younger than me. I have been volunteering at St. Marks for almost four years, assisting in many different groups and organizations sponsored by our church. I volunteer at this church because it has given me an opportunity to be myself, explore talents, and make strong connections, and I want to help continue this effort and reach out to kids who are struggling with a lot of the same difficulties I faced. I believe that volunteering here is a great experience for someone studying psychology because you meet and get to know many kids who are facing various issues in their lives.…

Should the United States require all adults to perform one year of community service by the age of 30? I personally think this is a topic that is not at all, relevant. I believe if someone wants to lend a helping hand, then they should lend a helping hand. If you don't prefer to do this kind of community service, the government shouldn't force you to do so. There would be a lot of change in how community service is done today if the government required at least one year to be served by the age of 30.…

During the last two weeks of my junior year, every student in my class was required to volunteer at a service site. For my service, I chose to go to the Mary Ryder Home, an all-women’s residential care facility for women of low-income status. I chose the home because it was around five minutes away from my high school and some seniors had told me that they had loved it there. During my time there, I came to bond with some of the women by painting their nails, talking about their grandchildren, or by watching soap operas with them. Many of the women in the home were very lonely and often gravitated towards me because they thought I would become friends with them.…

On Thursday, May 27th, I volunteered at the United Methodist soup kitchen to prepare them for the meal they would serve later that evening. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience not only because it was a great cause but also, the feeling you get from helping those less fortunate is a great sensation. I had volunteered there in the past serving in the evening so I wanted to help out earlier as to gain a new experience.…

One day, I had completed all my given tasks and I waited in the lounge for my mother to pick me up. I saw a dementia patient who constantly asked the desk clerk if her daughter had called. After the desk clerk tells her that her daughter has not called, the lady sits back down on the sofa for couple minutes and goes back to ask. It was disheartening to witness her asking for her daughter. Nonetheless, volunteering at the Morningside House of Laurel enhanced me as an individual. It provides me with an experience that is unique from other activities I do…

One of my most meaningful service opportunities was volunteering in the Utah Special Olympics last June. I spent the morning and early afternoon managing the Track and Field events of the Summer Games with friends and leaders from my church. This experience gave me a welcome change of perspective and an opportunity to focus on something greater than myself. On this day, I had the privilege of spending time with some of the kindest people I have ever met.…

Once upon a time, there was a rebellious girl, who always got drunk and did drugs. One night at a party, the police came and caught her doing illegal drugs. Her sentence was community service, and she did not know what to expect. After the first day of community service, she discovered that she actually enjoyed it. Community service changed her life because she got to see and help people who used to be just like her, who did drugs and got drunk all the time. She saw how her life could have been. Then, she changed her ways and she wasn’t a rebel anymore. Clearly, community service should be a law where students have to do a certain amount of it before graduating or moving up a grade.…

“Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote goodness or improve human quality of life. In return, this activity can produce a feeling of self-worth and respect. There is no financial gain involved for the individual. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development, socialization, and fun.” Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community. When helping less fortunate people it makes you appreciate and allows you not to take for granted the little things that you possess. For instance, water, food, a home, and clothes, I would even go as far to say under-garments such as t-shirts and socks, are valued by those who are less privileged and can’t even afford to get those bare necessities. When a person volunteers to a specific service without getting paid the rewards are endless. I can not speak for others but, putting a smile on some ones face due to my actions is better than any minimum wage check. I believe everyone should at least volunteer one time in their life. There are many services that one can do .It does not only have to involve giving away food. It can be volunteering at a shelter, a church, possibly a hospital. You don’t even always have to go to another place to volunteer. An easy way that a lot of people don’t think about is, when you see someone in need of someone to talk to, be that ear or be that friend. You are volunteering to be a support system to do this and the effects of this could be great and long lasting. This was not my very first time volunteering. The very first time I volunteered was when I was a sophomore in high school. My elementary school put together a popcorn stand where we passed out bags of popcorn to the children. I was not prepared for what was going to happen. My mother actually tricked me and told me that she had a job for me where I would get paid. At this time I was just a young kid just to make a…

My reflection on the impact it gave me. For the past few weeks I’ve been volunteering at Sunrise senior Living Center, where I played bridge, bingo with senior citizens. The impact that I gave to the director activities and the senior citizen, was an impact most could have found hard to do. I made the senior citizens feel, like leaders, I made sure that anytime I go to Sunrise; I would help the elderly with all their needs. Not only did I help them with bingo and entertained them with bridge, I’ve also participated in car wash for Alzheimer’s disease. I obviously made an impact in cleaning car, but as a group, I think that we impacted the way adults think of teenagers. We not only washed cars from tire to roof, but we…
