Volleyball: Olympic Games and Chick Boom
Ella Suzuki
“Side out, side out!” “You got this!” The crowd’s roaring chant sounded like a broken record on full blast. All of a sudden, my ears deafen, my heart racing, my hands moist and my throat dry. Perspiration slowly trails down my face as I glance at the scoreboard. The score reads 17-18. My team, SF Tremors 13-1 has been going back and forth with Texas team Magic for more than an hour. Both teams won one set, and now Magic is in the lead by one point. This is such a long and exhausting game! I think frantically, talking to myself, focus Ella, focus. I try locking my tired eyes on the tall, chubby server but the towering middle blocker with wingspan of an eagle and outside blocker enhanced biceps were partially blocking my view. The girl serves a powerful topspin jump-serve towards Karlee, but the short, lightning quick defensive specialist dives forward to pass the ball. It was a perfect pass, going directly to the petite hands of our skilled setter, Erica. She sets me on zone 4. Leaping into the air like a graceful ballerina, I pull my right arm back to load and when my hand contacts the ball I slam it at an open hard-angle, zone 4. My team and I hysterically cheer, “ALL KILL, CHICK CHICK BOOM!” I turn to see who was bellowing; “do it again” it was my mother with proud eyes and a permanent smile across her face starring directly at me. The score shows 18-18. Everyone rotates, and Erica serves a fast float serve to the other team. Number 24 on Magic shanks the ball, and with Erica scoring an ace, the score now reads 19-18. I wish I could serve like that, I murmur quietly. Taking notice of the now nervous number 24 bracing from across the net, Erica serves again at the same person, but number 24 manages to pass the ball. Magic’s setter sets a 1(quick set) to the middle hitter, who swiftly turns at the last moment and slams the ball right in front of Erica. The score is tied again, 19-19, Magic with the serve.

She shuffled her feet in order to get better traction to the wooden floor, and looked up at the hundreds of people meticulously watching her every move . Then finally the ball was served straight to Brooke, giving her little reaction time then she stuck out her passing platform and closed her eyes.…

I had to get up and chase down my girl, it was my duty. I couldn’t let my team down. I get right on her pushing myself to now stay with her. She has the ball. I give all my energy to stop her from going to the cage. She quickly dodges and blows right by me. I see the back of her ponytail and I knew I misplaced my feet. I was on my heels. I run as fast as I have ever run and thrash my stick forward to check her. My stick hits the top of hers for a clean black check. I race after the ground ball. I bend as low as I can making sure I don’t miss, and I sprint to the attacking side of the field. As I run it over the attacking line, the buzzer beeps. The game was over, we lost. I jog off the field leaping into Colleen’s arms. I didn’t care that we lost, I had my best game. It took all the confidence and everything in me to step up to the plate and I couldn’t have done a better job. Colleen gripped me tight breathing so hard placing her forehead against mine. We both couldn’t contain our…

Then, the bad news began, Eller hit a dropping ball that fell in between Felsch and Jackson. When Felsch got the ball, he tried to throw it to second, but the throw went over the second baseman's head allowing the runner to advance to third base. The leadoff hitter was up next and hit a line drive right over the shortstop's head for a single bringing the run in. The next batter hit a double after some controversial fielding by Felsch. The next hit was also to Felsch, andthe fielding was even worse allowing two more runs to score, and the hitter eventually scored also the opposing pitcher pitched well enough to hold the Sox’s leaving the Red’s one game from winning the series in the newly adapted best-of-nine format (BR…

We were up twelve with the final quarter the only thing keeping us—Rocky River High School— away from the title of New Jersey State Basketball Champions. Our team had been favorites to win in three out of my fours years of starting as the high school shooting guard. Enclosed within a 27’ X 78’ tennis court it was the final point of the match. As I shuffled and pivoted to the right with both my arms gripping my racket at shoulder height; I took a deep breath as I approached the tennis ball and made my move. I pondered how my nerves synapsed with my tendons and ligaments in my arms and feet to produce a forehand, while monitoring my heart beat and regulating metabolic demand, an intrigue with the workings of this familiar, yet mysterious body. It was a matter of seconds, and the ball landed exactly on the boundary of the singles’ court. Game, set, and match! Ten years of practice has taught me every point be played like my life depends on it and these experiences led me to my passion and my future: medicine…

Even a mathematician wasn’t need to figure out that Christy was running straight at her demise. Everyone on the oval could feel the ground shake as Christy edged closer and closer time slowed down the two forwards however, left a slight gap in there wall like defence. But Christy was no winger her body was too big to squeeze through the gap. Christy collided with the left and right shoulder of the two defenders the sound was indescribable it was like Loki and Thor going at each other in a marvels movie. The ball slipped out of Chrissy’s grasp, and came rolling to a stop on a fresh patch of grass. After possession was handed over to the opposition in the scrum. Ash burn high began one of their notorious counter attacks which was to draw defenders into the middle of the field whilst their wingers became unmarked leaving a gaping hole in any defending team. The only floor in this straight is that they have been doing the same move all season and somehow it still managed to get us almost every time, but this time I was ready. Instead falling for their trap, I waited for the cut out pass to come spiralling towards there right side…

The argument in the text is “For men, success or failure as an athlete can be a major part of a man’s identity..... knowing about and participating in sports is an important source of men’s gender socialization....the attitude that “sports builds character” runs deep in American culture..... Sports are considered to be where one learns to be a man.”(Anderson and Taylor) In the Andersen text it states that “for most men, playing or watching sports is often the context for developing relationships with fathers.....Through sports relationships with male peers, more than anyone else, however, the men’s identity was shaped. As boys, the men could form “safe” bonds with other men (Messner 2002)”(Anderson and Taylor). In the typical view of an…
