Voice Recognition
2a. The computing innovation that is represented by my computational artifact is that of voice recognition. Voice recognition is commonly used to operate a device, perform commands, or write without having to use a keyboard, mouse or press any buttons. The user is able to talk to a computer with automatic speech recognition (ASR) programs and tell it what to do.(5) The computing innovation was created with the intention of being user-friendly and helping people with a variety of disabilities. My artifact illustrates this by going through the basic functions that all voice recognition applications use to convert speech to text. I added text to explain the steps on one side of the arrow. On the other side of the arrow, the text summarizes the big algorithmic parts of voice recognition. Then I choose a picture off of the internet of a person utilizing a voice recognition application. Next to the picture, I added the shape of a globe to illustrate my text that explains the global market of voice technologies.
2c. A beneficial effect that voice recognition technologies and applications can have on society is that everyone can make use of this application. A voice activated software that is connected to a word processing program can allow people to dictate instead of having to write or type of by hand. People can dictate three times faster than they can type which leads to an increased amount of production.
Another benefit of voice recognition on society is that it enables a blind or disabled person to gain a level of self-independence. These individuals would be able to operate a computer or other similar device through voice recognition software. However, the innovation can have negative effects as well.
