Preparing for my day as professional mental health counselor takes time. When I am leaving work at the end of a busy day, I always take the time to look at my schedule for the next day. The first thing I do to prepare for my job the next day is to look at my schedule to see with whom I will be meeting with, and the time schedule for my first and last appointment. I familiarize myself with the clients I will be working with, and pull each clients file to refresh myself on our last session. This is necessary for me to prepare for the appointment. It is important for me to be prepared and show my client that I am in tune to what is going on with them. I used to do all this first thing in the morning but I have found that it works better for me if I do it at the end of my day. My being prepared helps me to give the client my full attention and helps the client to gain confidence in my abilities. It helps personalize the session between me, as the counselor, and them as the client.…

There are many environments clinical mental health counselors work in. Gerige mentions a few with I the text; agency/community mental health centers, private practice, substance abuse programs, small college counseling centers, university health services, in the barn, and home/schools. After reading the information, I realized what settings I want to avoid; ones requiring school locations. I do not see myself in a small college counseling center or a university health center. I see myself more in an agency or community setting, working with wide ranges of diagnostics and a large diverse population. There are a few settings not mentioned I could see myself, in the woods, or an art studio. I am highly intrigued with wilderness and arty therapy.…

The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) provides cash benefits, material goods and commodities, expert services, positive discrimination, and credits/vouchers. Cash benefits are paid to “customer as a vendor” clients to reimburse them for expenses that would have otherwise been directly paid for by OVR, such as transportation to and from a training site. Material goods and commodities are provided to clients in the form of rehabilitation tools and tools needed in order to perform job duties like computers, software, adaptive tools and technology, mechanical tools, etc. Expert services are provided by Certified Rehabilitation Counselors who all possess no less than a Master’s Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation or a related field.
