Something the Lord Made

Vivian Thomas was a black man living in a time of great prejudice in our country. He was very intelligent and skilled in the field of medicine and was an asset to the scientists and doctors trying to find a cure for the "blue baby" syndrome. He had great determination and humility while being faced with prejudice from so many people and is an inspiration to not only the African American scientists and medical professionals who followed him, but for many people even today who hear his story. Vivian Thomas's talents and character traits were given to him by God to be used even in the face of so many trials, and I believe, after hearing his story that God uses the trials in our lives to make us into the people he wants us to be.
Throughout his life and his career, Thomas was faced with the prejudice and persecution against African Americans in the country at the time. The United States was segregated and many laws made it difficult for a black man or women to follow their dreams. Thomas was not only looked down upon by many in the medical field because of his race, but was even betrayed by the man he considered a friend and mentor, after proving to be an asset

Sometimes we think that our plans must lead down a better road, or that God must not love us enough to protect us from this pain we feel, but God actually uses the painful experiences to further develop our character. Vivian Thomas could have given up when it became too discouraging, but instead he persevered and became an inspiration to many people. During times that are hard, God teaches us more about life, ourselves, and most importantly, about Him. Sometimes it is even necessary to go through a difficult time before we are able to realize the ways in which we need to grow and

Though not as well known today as many of his contemporaries, T. Thomas Fortune was the foremost African American journalist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Using his editorial position at a series of black newspapers in New York City, Fortune established himself as a leading spokesman and defender of the rights of African Americans in both the South and the North (wikipedia). The life of T Thomas Fortune spanned several significant periods in American history. His seventy-two years included the experiences of slavery, Reconstruction, "the Nadir," and the Harlem Renaissance. In varying degrees, these opposing periods in time influenced and determined the direction of Fortune 's life and the realization if his identity as an "Afro-American.” On the other hand, one of the most influential, celebrated, and criticized black leaders of the twentieth century was Booker T. Washington. Few public figures in African American life during the period of post-slavery excited as much passion and misunderstanding as Washington. Born a slave and deprived of any early education, he became America’s foremost black educator of the late 1890s and early 1900s, introducing the nation to his own brand of education and reform for the post-Civil War United States.…

Dillard writes this book both to reflect on her life and the life of other people, whose life is drowned with confusion in their relationship with God. Dillard constantly asks herself the question, which the intended audiences might also often ask, why didn’t God do anything to eliminate the tragedies and make a world in accordance to the kind of perfect world where peace and comfortness pervade? The purpose, then, is to answer these questions through the life story of a moth and Julie Norwich: although they all suffer from unbearable pains without apparent and justifiable reasons, what they are experiencing are all planned by the Christ’s will. The ultimate meaning and purpose of their suffering is that they can experience life in a realm that transcends the materialistic and secular world and eventually purify their spirits. Dillard expects the audiences to continue loving God despite all the seemingly purposeless sufferings that God put them through.…

In The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, race is one of the main themes as Skloot tells her story about Henrietta. When Henrietta goes to the doctor to discover some pain that she has and how the doctors took samples out of her without her consent. Many were exploited and their bodies were used for medical reasons and were not treated like human beings, but like experiments. “You reach a point where you’re at the bottom of hell, yet you have your arms crossed and a smile on your face, and you feel you’re the luckiest person on earth. Why? Because at your feet you have a tiny dead fish” (Martel 217). Of course it is normal to feel as if it is better to just give up on life; everyone has been in a position where it is just too painful to keep going. However, the majority of the times these feelings stay as just a feeling, and people never take that extra step to actually give up. People who persevere through their pain understand that life should not be taken for granted. One must prove that he can withstand the difficulties that he might face throughout his life, then he shall be granted to continue his life, “Was there any reward greater that life?” (Martel…

From the beginning of the book, Thomas was always courageous. Even though he lost his memory and did not know where he was, he did not break down, and he tried to adapt with the new environment. His first heroic act happened when he ran out of the Glade into the Maze to save Minho and the injured Alby, when they could not come back to the Glade before the Doors closed. Knowing that he had to stay in the Maze the whole night to fight against the Grievers, they were deadly mechanical monsters that came out at night to kill humans, Thomas was not concerned about his own safety. When Minho abandoned Thomas and Alby, instead of fleeing to save himself and leave Alby behind, Thomas pulled Alby off the ground and wrapped him with vines, to keep him away from the Grievers. Not only did Thomas help Alby get out of harm way, he ran the opposite way to distract the Grievers from finding Alby’s hiding spot. Thomas bravely fought the Grievers and tricked them to roll off the cliff.…

The Bible says “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God” also, God reveals that suffering carries with it a noble purpose: It should help us to grow in brotherly love, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians6:2) I think that when we support each other through suffering we form closer relationships. I believe that suffering is a part of life that needs to be embraced and that for me, I find comfort in knowing God allows suffering to serve a divine purpose. When we return to God it will bring an end to sadness and suffering. I suffer every day with anxiety. It makes me a better person because I know what it’s like to suffer, and because I suffer, I am a more compassionate person to others. I go out of my way to try to lift others in spirit because I know what it feels like to be down. I try to be a wonderful friend because I know how shortcoming in friends can be a letdown, and how having a good friend has kept me safe on bad days. I think sometimes when people don’t suffer they become self-centered and think they are above others. I think it is often when we suffer that we are drawn closer to our families and given a reality check. Suffering helps us to fulfill our potential as children of God (1John…

Every day we are given a fresh start; another chance to move forward in our lives and accomplish the things we thrive to achieve day to day. A new day can also liberate us from our past mistakes and provide us with a chance to change our ways. We are all faced with misery and misfortune at points in our lives, some more than others. We must recognize that it is not the burden in itself that shapes who we are, but how well or how poorly we deal with the difficulties. Sometimes misfortunes can be seen in a negative light; because it seems unjust, therefore we response in a negative matter, and become negligent to change. Overcoming tragic events is what truly counts, for we are meant to live happily and in acceptance that there are things that we cannot change. In many cases, individuals seem to feel as though they’ve lost an amount so great that they are unable to free themselves of the pain. This perspective often leads to further suffering. A Temporary Matter by Jhumpa Lahou and Kiss Me by Andrew Pyper demonstrate a loss of identity, negligence towards communication, and eventually leading to the destruction of a relationship.…

    My Personal Faith

My faith has enabled me to handle life challenges from my past and present. Some of these challenges have been series of events that I could hardly believe were happening, while others came with great joy. At five years old, my younger brother, Chandler, died unexpectedly. This was a tough challenge for my whole family to face. This challenge could have easily torn my family apart but together, as a team with God, we worked hard at picking up the pieces and moving forward even when there were days that seemed to be impossible. In the fifth grade, I was diagnosed with a common learning disability known as Attention Deficit Disorder. I am faced with this challenge on a daily basis. I have learned to cope with this disorder over the years by making prayer and patience priorities in helping me conquer this challenge. This challenge was especially difficult during my SAT and ACT tests. Certain scores on these tests were required to get into college and play NCAA football. The stress and pressure of taking these tests felt unbearable at times. While studying and before and during each test, I would remind myself that, through God, all things are possible. With God by my side, I was able to achieve the scores needed to reach my college and athletic goals.…

    Tough Times

A tough time is something that all of us has or will experience. It doesn't feel good during tough times. It seems like everything is not the way you want it during the tough times. Nobody likes to have to go through a tough time. A tough time can be somebody dying, a bad test, a fight, being sick, or being grounded. I have experienced some difficult times, but I got over them after a while. One of my experiences was my great aunt dying of cancer. She was a special person to me. I used to go to her house all the time and I loved her cooking. We almost never had any arguments and she really cared for me, even when I was being bad. When she died I didn't believe God. Why would this God take someone like that away from me? I hated it. For a while I didn't want to talk about God, I didn't like him. I thought it was his entire fault my great aunt died. As I grew older I understood why she had to die. Instead of suffering through all the pain, she could be in a place of no pain. I used to only think of the bad parts of death, but I later realized there is also a happy side. I think most people think there is no good in death and it is a time to be sad and cry. Life is about how you lived, not how you died. If she was still alive she wouldn't want to see me be sad and mad all the time. From this tough experience I learned that once I can get over an obstacle I will be a much stronger person. You should always live life to the fullest because you never know what will happen tomorrow. Some people get into stupid arguments with a person, but when the person is not around anymore, they really regret doing that kind of thing. Although it may seem like the person you are having a fight with doesn't care for you, the person actually does. I rarely…
