Venus at Vulcan’s Forge The painting that I chose to write about is Francois Boucher’s Venus at Vulcan’s Forge. This painting is a collection of four paintings completed for Jean-Francois Bergeret de Frouville. Boucher painted this particular painting in 1769. In the painting Venus is seen presenting her mortal son Aeneas and she wants Vulcan to make a sword for her son. The center of the painting is Venus floating on a cloud with Aeneas while Vulcan is off to the side to the left. Behind Vulcan to the left you can see the tools that Vulcan used to make the armor. On the bottom of the painting below Venus you can see an attendant bringing the helmet and clothes for Vulcan to give

Another piece of art is one I have chosen is a jar from the Ancient Near East collection which is located in the Smithsonian Museum of art as well. This jar is from the chalcolithic period and is from Iran. This jar is made of earthenware which is a porous clay which is shaped and designed and then fired at a low temperature to harden and keep its form which is today know as pottery to many. The colors that were used on this piece were red and black. The red the bas color of the jar and the line designs are done in black. The designs on this piece are geometric shapes of triangle and circles. This piece is three-dimensional and can also be considered a bulky mass. painted designs in contrasting colors had a long history in…

John Singleton Copley’s painting: Mars, Venus, and Vulcan: The Forge of Vulcan features Venus which is the symbol of love and sex. It shows Venus as very seductive young woman. It also has cupid’s arrows which also represents love. Half of the painting is painted dark giving the painting a dreadful feeling. Half of the painting is painted light giving the feeling of relief. There are three cupids in the picture doing completely different things. One of the cupid’s is silencing everyone, one is tormenting the soldier while the last one tries to steal the soldier sword. There is also what seems like a peasant in the painting trying to get some of Venus love potion. The texture on this painting is very smooth. The tree looks realistic and so do the clouds. The colors in the painting that stands out is red and blue. Red represents strength and blue represents trust. This painting tells a story about a soldier who cannot be seduced easily not even by Venus’s love.…

I have chosen the artwork Judith Decapitating Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi in 1620. The reason I chose this painting is because of the graphic nature and the history behind the painting. The painting is 6’ 6 ⅜” x 5’ 3 ¾” oil on canvas located at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The painting shows two women (Judith and her maidservant) holding down and cutting off the head of Holofernes. This is clear because of the sword that Judith is holding near his neck and the blood that is painted running down the white sheets.…

Mexican muralism offers us one of the most politically charged and expressive art forms of the 20th century. David Alfaro Siqueiros and Jose Clemente Orozco are two of the three so called triumvirate of Mexican Muralists, the third being Diego Rivera. Both of the artists have a unique style and a strong sense of morals and political ideals. Their styles are similar in the sense of the amount of expression and movement in their pieces They also share a common ideology that shows up often in their work. Siqueiros’ Portrait of the Bourgeoisie and New Democracy along with Orozco’s American Civilization and Catharsis show you a great cross section of Mexican Muralism, revealing the passions and beliefs of the time period.…

Following his first trip to Italy in 1630, Spanish Baroque artist Diego Velazquez completed his epic oil on canvas, Apollo in the Forge of Vulcan. Requested without commission by Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens, Apollo in the Forge of Vulcan depicts the moment when the god Apollo tells Vulcan that Venus, his wife, is having an affair with another god, Mars. Apollo has presumably entered Vulcan’s blacksmith workshop to bear the bad news amongst the other blacksmiths in the forge. The moment when Apollo warns Vulcan of Venus’ adultery is the focus of the painting, centered by Apollo’s gaze and Vulcan’s reaction. Vulcan’s importance to the painting’s narrative is signified by his communication with Apollo.…

Visiting the National Gallery of Art, I discovered two beautiful paintings that I never have encountered before. Out of all the new paintings I encountered, my favorite is undoubtedly The Artist’s Garden at Vétheuil by Claude Monet. Even though I love the Monet very dearly, another new painting I came to love is The Old Violin by John Fredrick Peto. While the differences between The Old Violin and The Artist’s Garden at Vétheuil seem immeasurable, the paintings actually contain many similar qualities such as medium, contrast, color, and era.…
