Greek era mosaic, "The Battle of Issus"
Art Critique- 2011

The artwork I’ve chosen for my report is the famous mosaic from the Greek era: “the Battle of Issus”. This mosaic depicts a war scene in the c 80 B.C. This marks the defeat of a very influential rival of Alexander the great in the uneven coastal plain of Issus.

Alexander’s victory over King Darius II proves Alexander as a strong warrior which was capable of conquering vast lands. Alexander is quite famous for all his brave stuff so I’d rather concentrate on my chosen art piece and what it depicts.

Well, this mosaic, although is quite a bit worn off due to its age, still has various points to be looked at. It still carries the same importance as the war of 80 BC., a great event for the Greeks. On the first look, this mosaic tells me that its executed in warm colours partly for a strong impact and partly to describe the seriousness of the situation since war is not an everyday thing and being victorious always has to be memorable.
The horizontal layout of the mosaic is evenly covered with the components of a battlefield i.e. the tense warriors trying to own victory, horses moving here and there, king Darius II is almost in the center of the composition perhaps because his actions really matter in portraying the climax! His direct eye contact with Alexander who is on the left side of the composition says it all. Moreover, its not just the eye contact that’s grabbing our attention towards these two main characters of the so called pictoral story,
It’s the direction of the spears and arrows towards Alexander that is making us witness Alexander’s calm, brave and focused attack against Darius’s frightened, weak and retreating wide eyed-open, face. He looks as if he is sure of his defeat and is running back. On the other hand his “running back” is stressed by the horse’s back in the middle front of the layout. The artist has tried his best and is quite successful in

The artwork I chose for the Greeks is called the Hydria. This vase contains the artwork of Hercules and Athena. The vase art relates with Athena coming from Mount Olympus to bring Hercules to live among the other gods. In the myth it is hard to show who is who, because the Greeks see their gods as walking among humans. In the vase we can tell Athena by her armor, because she is the warrior goddess. We can see Hercules by the messenger god Hermes. We see the chariot and helpers, helping harness the horses for Athena and Hercules to ride to Mount Hercules. The vase reflects the story of how the Greeks view the gods and the heroes.…

During this time period, there was something called tetrarchy which means rule by four. This is a form of government, however, it is heavily impact how art appear to be during this time. Tetrarch often appear on both coins and statues. Just like this sarcophagus appear to be, there are four sides predicting the battle’s outcomes. Specifically, on each side of the sarcophagus is representing a different scenario, gives the audiences a better understanding/visuals. The standing figures on the side of the sarcophagus are the soldiers, they are well-equipped with various weapon in order to strike the battle. Most of them have helmet, short tunics, and cuirass (plates of body armor). The mark of high ranking officers are knotted on their belts. Most of these soldiers are equipped with swords on their right hand to strike/attack, and their left hand is equipped with a round shield to defend themselves. Ever since the beginning of time man has always had an eye for art. They have always been fascinated by what they see. For the most part art has to this day great meaning. Ranging from a person’s play toy to a sculpture opening people’s eyes to a flash back in time where Gods ruled. The art work I chose “two Statuettes of two worshipers”, from the Square Temple at Eshnunna (modern Tell Asmar), Iraq, ca. 2700 BCE. Gypsum inlaid with shell and black limestone, male figure approximately 2’6’’ high. This peace symbolizes something quite important it shows man’s transition from the wild to civilized society. These statuettes demonstrate how religion and social standings play a giant role in people’s lives and artwork.…

At only 32 years old, Alexander had created the largest empire the world had seen. He conquered land ranging from Greece to Egypt, and from Egypt to Asia and Persia. At just 20 years old, Alexander received the throne from Philip. Soon after, he began to build his empire. Alexander was very proud of his accomplishments, as one would expect. After defeating his close friend Dareius in battle, Alexander boasted, “What, pray? Dost thou not think that we are already victorious, now that we are relieved from wandering a vast and desolate country in pursuit of a Dareius who avoids battle?” (Plutarch…

One reason I chose this piece is because of the intricacy of this beautiful work. The expressions on the faces of not only on Laocoon and his sons but also the serpents truly bring to life the words of Virgil in the Aeneid. The anguish on the faces of Laocoon and his sons depict the defeat of the Trojans at the hands of the Greeks. The expression on the faces of the serpents depicts the Greek warriors ' ability to overcome their enemies and bring them to swift justice.…

When Alexander the Great conquered Tyre, he mercilessly killed over 50 thousand people. Not only did he murder this many people, but he also ruled with brutality as an important factor. While destroying cities, and only sparing some religious monuments, he managed to become a “success.” Pounding fear into the brains of followers, some, like the Persians, surrendered to him to be spared or simply out of respect. While Alexander did show mercy on the Persians and some of those who respected him, he still committed his crimes.…

The art for the Hellenistic Greece period that I selected is “Lysippos, Apoxyomenos (The Scraper),” (Benton, DiYanni, 2008, p. 77); originally a bronze sculpture and replicated in marble reveals the competitive nature and strife to succeed with greatness. The Scraper represents the relationship between art and culture of Hellenistic Greece by capturing how the civilizations interest became more individualistic rather than basing on the successes of the whole civilization. The art would have influenced the culture of that civilization by stimulating others to focus more to make higher individual achievements. The culture influenced that genre of art by the focus they placed and capturing the portrayal of individual strengths.…

One difference that we’ll take note of beforehand is that the Stele of Naram-Sin is an Akkadian piece while the Palette of King Narmer is Egyptian. Now just because they’re from different cultures, you’d be surprised what they have in common. And thus, we start with the similarities of both pieces.…
