The Vegetarian Diet The vegetarian diet is a healthy lifestyle followed by more than seven million Americans. Every coin has two sides, and likewise, the vegetarian diet can be healthy or not depending on the choices a person makes. Vegetarian diets focus on plants for food that tend to be low in cholesterol and fat. “Many studies have shown that a vegetarian diet seems to contribute to a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and some cancers.” (“Health” 8). Plus, consuming a vegetarian diet can help protect our planet. However, a vegetarian diet can be unhealthy and even to kill people if it does not contain enough nutrients. So, being aware of the pros and cons of the vegetarian diet can help consumers make the healthiest decision. Lots of young people choose a vegetarian diet to keeping skinny but ignore the health benefits. Vegetarian diets focus on vegetables and fruits without meat, which is a main source of protein. Five years ago, I was almost died because of consuming the low-nutrition vegetarian diet. In order to lose weight, I only ate vegetables and fruits without any meat during a whole year. Day by day, my body got really weak. Finally, I fell down in the restroom one day and totally lost consciousness after that. When I woke up, I just knew that I had the terrible anemia. It was the doctor who transfused 400cc of blood to my body to save me. Since then, I truly understand the importance of the health benefits the diet has. The well-balanced vegetarian diet is surely beneficial for people’s health and the planet’s environment in some situations. “First, people who follow the vegetarian diet are less likely to become obese than individuals who do not follow. This may be partly the result of higher consumption of lower-calorie, more filling foods. Furthermore, a vegetarian diet can reduce the risk factor of many diseases, such as high blood pressure, cancers and heart disease.” (Kimball). Second,
