Using Epidural Anesthesia
. The advantages of using epidural anesthesia during childbirth reduce the pain during labor and help the patient through exhaustion and fatigue. It also allows the patient to be attentive, relaxed, and have strength in order to partake in her birth experience. The most common effects of using epidural anesthesia may cause low blood pressure, backaches, severe headaches, nausea, soreness, and numbness in the uterine causing difficulty urinating. In rare instances, it may cause neurological problems due to inserting the needle directly into the spinal chord or nerves. It may also cause permanent nerve damage and breathing

    The sample size consisted of nulliparous women planning to give birth vaginally. The women were put into two groups based on the treatment they received, either epidural analgesia or other forms of pain relief including continuous midwifery support (CMS). Women who received epidural analgesia was n=690, and women who received other methods of pain relief was n=302. The results show that back pain was common before, during, and after pregnancy, and women were at risk for post-partum back pain at six months if they had back pain before pregnancy or at two months after pregnancy. There was no significant relationship between “epidural analgesia, mode of delivery, spontaneous or induced labor, birthweight, and back pain during pregnancy” with post-partum back pain at six months. Headache was much more common in women who received epidural analgesia, during pregnancy and at two months, but not at six months. The study also showed that there was no association of migraine with epidural analgesia. Dilation and extraction is another surgical procedure. This involves a luminaria to be inserted vaginally to dilate the cervix two days before the procedure. This causes the water to break on the third day. The fetus is rotated and forceps are used to grasp and pull the legs, shoulders and arms through the birth canal. A small incision is made at the base of the skull to allow a suction catheter inside. The catheter removes the cerebral material until the skull collapses. The fetus is then completely removed.
