Use Equation 11.2 To Convert The Client's Body Weight In Pounds To Pounds?
Step 7: Use equation 11.2 to convert the client’s body weight in pounds to kilograms. pounds (lb) ÷ 2.2046 = kilograms (kg) (11.2) body weight (lb) = 181 lb 181 lb 2.2046 = kilograms (kg) body weight (kg) = 82 kg

Step 8: Use equation 11.6 (from [2]) to determine the predicted VO2 max score in ml . kg-1 . min-1. VO2 max (ml . kg-1 . min-1) = [(10.8 x W) BW] + 7 ÷ (11.6) from step 6, predicted maximal work rate (W) = 192 W body (kg) = 82 kg VO2 max (ml . kg-1 . min -1) = [(10.8 x 192) ÷ 82] +7 VO2 max (ml . kg-1 . min-1) = 32.3 ml . kh-1 . min-1

Step 9: Use table 11.17 [2] to compare this client’s predicted VO2 max of 32.3 ml . kg-1 . min-1 to normative values. 32.3 ml . kg-1

Step 8 : Determine predicted VO2 max score in ml/.kg/. min VO2 max (ml/kg/min) = (10.8 x W / BW)+ 7 From step 6 , predicted maximal work rate (W) = 192 W Body weight (kg) = 82 kg.
VO2 max (ml.kg.min)= (10.8 x 192) / 82 +7
VO2 max (ml.kg.min) = 32.3 ml.kg.min.

Step 9 : Compare this client’s predicted VO2 max of 32.3 ml.kg.min to normative values, 32.3 ml.kg. min for 23 year old mate ranks at less than the 10th percentile. Therefore more than 90% of the population (2) have higher VO2 max scores, while less than 10% have a lower VO2 max.

Astrand –Rhyming Cycle Ergometer Test

TheAstrand –Rhyming cycle ergometer test is a single-stage test. Total duration of the test is six minutes.

Equipment

• Mechanically or electrically braked cycle ergometer. • Metronome (if the cycle ergometer does not have an rpm gauge) • Stopwatch

Procedure

• Set the pedaling cadence at 50 rpm. • Set the work rate. Work rates used for the Astrand-Rhyming test are chosen based on the gender and fitness level. Note that when estimating a client’s fitness level (unconditioned vs. conditioned ) prior to the Astrand-Rhyming test to determine the starting work rate, the recommendation is to always choose the more conservative work rate (unconditioned) if there is any question about the client’s current

Where BW= body weight in kilograms (kg)

7.Compare the age –corrected vO2 max estimation (ml/.kg/.min) from Astrand – Rhyming test to the normative values listed in tables.

Example

A 57 year old female client who weighs 145 pounds(66 kilograms) has just completed the Astrand –Rhyming cycle ergometer test, The following data were recorded :

Work rate = 450 kg.m.min
Heart rate after 2nd min = 122 beats/min
Heart rate after 5th min = 129 beats/min
Heart rate after 6th min = 135 beats/min

Step 1 (129 beats/min + 135 beats/min )/ 2 = 132 beats/min average Step 2 . Estimated VO2 max value from table for an average HR of 132 beats/min and a work rate of 450 kg.m min = 2.71 min.
Step 3. Age correction factor from table for a 57 year old client = 0.70.
Step 4 . 2.7 L/ min x 0.70 age correction factor = 1.89 L/.min.
Step 5 . (1.89 L/.min x 1,000) / 66 kilograms = 28.64 ml./kg/.min. Step 6 . Aerobic fitness category from tables for 28.64 ml/.kg/.min for a 57 year old female = Good
Step 7 . Percentile rank from tables for 28.64 ml.kg.min for a 57 year old female : 55%
