UOP COM172 DQ WEEK 2
What is a style guide? Is adhering to a style guide important? Why or why not?
A style guide is a set of rules to follow for writing. We adhere to the style guide to ensure our work is consistent. There are several writing types such as technical, commercial, journalism etc. We used a technical style guide to ensure that multiple authors would be able to update the operation manual. Using the technical style guide kept the tone of the document consistent and it was difficult to determine the additions to the original base manual.

Is there a difference between paraphrasing and summarizing? What is it? How do you know when it is most appropriate to use one or the other in an academic paper?
When summarizing we condense the main points into a shorter version of the author’s original work. Attention to proper citation should be used when summarizing as the possibility of plagiarism is greater. The summarization technique is often used to bring attention to the author’s more important portions. When we paraphrase we take the author’s body of work and rewrite it using one’s own words. While paraphrasing we must keep true to the author’s original ideas. We use paraphrasing when we want to quote the authors original words with disregard to the author’s style or we feel that the author’s ideas are important but that the context may be more complicated for the intended reader to understand. We determine if we need to summarize if we want to convey the author’s main ideas and give only an overview of the topic. Whichever technique we choose we must ensure that we properly cite the original author.

Preparing an outline has been considered as a troublesome process for so many writers and students of my age. During outlining, a person faces many hindrances such as inability to group ideas. In addition inability to decide on main ideas. For a person finds himself in a trap with many ideas surrounding him, and he cannot choose any one. The most abstracting hindrance is plagiarism. I for one am stuck of how to paraphrase a word. Maintaining parallel structure throughout the outlining process is a hard step to pass. Parallel structure helps give the outline the sense of organization. This helps the writer recall all of the information he needs in an easy way. Organization is an OMG! Organizing ideas is a problematic phase. All of the ideas on his mind jumble up a writer. Moreover, he finds it impossible to organize all of the ideas to fit into one outline. Outlining is regarded as a confusing process for all people. Since it is the key for opening the treasure containing a well-organized essay.…

Course goal two states, “incorporate texts into essays as meaningful support, making strategic use of summary, paraphrase, and quotation” (Villarreal). This course goal gave me a vivid point of view on how to take a complete reading and summarize it to one or several paragraph. One example is the article I used in essay three “Negotiating Identity” by Monileak Ourng. This article compacted more than one claim causing several main idea to be established. From understanding course goal two, I was able to paraphrase the article making it much easier to draw out the main idea. From paraphrasing the article, I was able to covert the whole reading into several paragraph without plagiarism In my essay, I stated, “Ourng’s purpose of writing this essay is to show how linguistic heritage has an effect on second generation immigrants identity” (“The Relationship Between Language and Identity” 2). I was able to use my own interpretation to give the readers a good understanding of the article and the main idea.…
