Reading
P5 – Skimming is when you look through something quickly to see what it contains.
M3 – Skimming is used in a uniformed public service police force to skim through records and witness testimonies.
D2 – Advantage: It saves time.
Disadvantage: You may miss some important information out.

P5 – Scanning is when you are looking for a particular bit of information. This is when you don’t have the time to read the whole document.
M3 – Scanning can be used in the police force when they are looking for testimonies.
D2 – Advantage: It saves time.
Disadvantage: It can be a wrong idea gained from the information.

P5 - Detailed reading is reading something in detail carefully. Taking in all the information.

P5 – Barriers to effective reading can be your surroundings and distractions. Written work may be in different language. Barrier can also be that they have messy writing. Dyslexia may be a barrier to effective reading. Visual impairment is a barrier to effective reading.
M3 – In the police force if a witness has dyslexia someone else can read it for them.
Writing
Letters
P5 – The structure and format of letters to personnel is if you know them you can write formal and if you don’t know them it is semi – formal and ends in ` yours sincerely`
M3 – Letters are used to call someone to come in for a statement. A letter showing pension changes for the police.
D2 – Advantage: It is not as nervous as speaking on a phone call.
Disadvantage: People won’t reply and you don’t know if they have got the letter.

P5 – A Memorandum is an informal letter to show a reminder.
M3 – It is used in a uninformed public service such as police force as a member of that force may leave memorandums for someone to change their shifts.
D2 – Advantage: It does not take a lot of time to write. It is simple and

D2 – Advantage: You will gain confidence.
Disadvantage: You may be quiet and people may not be able to hear you.
Barriers to verbal communication
P5 - There can be a lot of things that stand in your way when you communicate verbally , Problem with the audience , problem with you etc. Barriers can exist in operation and non-operational situations. Operational situations would rest upon the public service involved.
M3 – An operational situation for the police service might be attending a car crash and for the army it might be a unit in Afghanistan involved in a skirmish with the Taliban. An example of non-operational situation might be when a police officer attends a briefing. Listening
Effective Listening Skills
P5 – Effective listening skills is paying attention to what is being said because important information can be picked up through a conversation at any time. You cannot lose concentration and talk over the person.
