Ubc Personal Statement
Born and raised in a small city in the northeast of China, I did not experience much diversity in my life till I moved abroad for my PhD study. I joined University of British Columbia, Vancouver for my PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2004. UBC is home to a colorful mosaic of cultures, beliefs, ethnicities, sexual orientations, ages and appearances. I enjoyed the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and make friends with different cultural backgrounds. However, I did experience prejudice as a non-native English speaker even though in most times they were not intentional. I also had a few awkward moments of being discriminatory when it was pointed out by others because of my lacking of understanding. Encouraged by my supervisor, …show more content…
For a group of students from different education backgrounds, I encouraged all the students to ask questions, present their own comments, and freely respond to my questions. During these activities, I made a conscious effort to let all the students feel comfortable in articulating their opinions and actively engaging in discussions. From such efforts, I understood the specific challenges faced by different students. This really improved my teaching effectiveness and helped me quickly identify the needs from different students. I also found that each student brings his/her own perspective to the class, and that the group as a whole benefits from the …show more content…
As a faculty member, I will devote my time and effort to advance diversity in engineering education. As an advisor, I will work to recruit graduate students who are under-presented including women and other minority groups into my research team. As an instructor, I will fully appreciate the specific challenges faced by students from different educational backgrounds. I will make a conscious effort to pay attention to the needs of students from different backgrounds, especially those from underrepresented minority groups/families to make sure that all students will keep up with the class progress. I will try my best to build a diverse working environment that provides all students with an equal opportunity for academic

I started taking classes part-time at OSU my junior year of high school, and full-time my senior year. By the time I graduated high school, I took 40 credit hours of classes at OSU and had a 3.81 OSU GPA. Despite the tough coursework I found time to partake in numerous extracurricular activities. When I officially joined OSU as a freshman, I joined the small biomedical science major and biological sciences group. In these groups, I have not only helped my peers with their academics, but I have given them guidance on how to simultaneously manage both their academics and fitness pursuits.…

Abilene Christian University exceeds my expectations of a Christian University. I would like to go to a school that not only calls themselves "Christian" but actually acknowledges Jesus Christ as the rock of their school and education. Personally, God comes first in my life, a university that feels the same is absolutely magnificent! My beliefs are such that it is not about a religion but rather a relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ. I do not belong to a denomination, I belong to God only because the relationship that we have is much greater than any religious personnel could give me.…

As discussed in theme two, participants understood that they were paving the way for future Black women engineers and conceptualized their choices and actions as a means of social justice in academia. This form of social justice work, work which focuses on the equal distribution of opportunities for Black women engineering students, is evident as the participants expressed they must persevere in order to reach back and pull forward (Walker, 1984) other Black women. Caylee, Charlene, Katherine and the remaining participants each acknowledged that their perseverance in engineering will provide better opportunities for the Black women who choose to major in engineering after they graduate. Further, each participant understood the responsibility she has to serve as a role model and mentor for younger Black women who desire to become engineers. Finding appropriate mentors and role models in the academy for women in engineering is a difficult task (Chesler & Chesler, 2002). However, having a mentor or role model is beneficial in terms of academic performance, persistence, and navigating the field (Chesler & Chesler, 2002; Felder, Felder, Mauney, Hamrin, & Dietz, 1995; Wilson, et al., 2012). Additionally, a number of participants conceptualized their…

After doing rigorous college research to find the perfect college for me, that offers a Biological Science major, I have come to the conclusion that I am applying to UC Davis. UC Davis has caught my attention since it is renowned as one of the best Universities in California and the commute is only a 35-minute drive from where I live. After further research, I have also learned that UC Davis is one of the most ethnically diverse colleges in America, which is an important factor to me, as a person of color. Furthermore, I am deeply interested in majoring in Biological Sciences and I have read that UC Davis has a strong STEM program.…
