Amy Rowley, a deaf kindergartener, is the subject of this case. Her parents, deaf as well, attended a meeting prior to Amy’s first day of school to discuss services. She was to be placed in the general education classroom, have the use a FM hearing aid, and given a sign language interpreter. Amy had a successful year in kindergarten and the interpreter stated that Amy did not need his services. At the annual IEP meeting, the school proposed that Amy continue the use of the FM hearing aid, have speech therapy, and gave access to a tutor for the deaf. However, the parents still wanted Amy to have the interpreter. The school district’s Committee of the Handicapped agreed that the interpreter was not needed but the Rowley’s disagreed and requested…

The teacher will begin this process by writing a letter to the schools counselor or special education coordinator. It is important that the letter contains information about the student’s areas of strength and concerns of their weaknesses. The teacher should clearly express any reasons as why the student would benefit from enrollment in the special education program. The counselor or coordinator will then spend the letter of request to other school administrators, such as; the principal and school boards for review and consideration. An administrator closely examine the areas of the student’s difficulties or weakness and weighs the benefits of placing the student into the special education program or weather taking another course action would be more appropriate. The parent of the student is also presented the letter and allowed the opportunity examine it and take into consideration the enrollment into the special education program of their child. Should the administration find reasonable cause to consider enrollment into the special education program, a specialist will do an evaluation of the student through a series of screening test. Also during the same time frame, the school records of the student will be examined in the areas of academics, social interactions with peers, and any behavior issues that have been documented.…

Over the past three semesters all I have been hearing about is IDEA, 504, CHILD FIND, NCLB, and all of the other programs that are in place to make sure that children are not left on their own if they are in need of extra help inside or outside of the classroom. Each time any of these programs were mentioned I would always wonder about the process that a school would follow to qualify a student under these special services. I have never been exposed to the process, just told when a child was "special Ed" or "mainstreamed" in my internship classroom. I know that there has to be several steps involved in this process, otherwise there would be some major issues with parents and other professionals, when you tell them "I think your child needs special services." I also know that there has to be more than one persons opinion involved and, as in every aspect of school, parents must be completely involved and in control.…

I started a family at a fairly young age that includes my two beautiful daughters who before preschool, were diagnosed with a learning disability at the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resource System South (FDLRS). I dedicated my life to ensure my daughters were enrolled in the best schools and programs available. I faithfully attended their Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, to support their learning development and education career. During these sessions I was extremely impressed by the collaboration and dedication of everyone involved on the panel. Throughout the process I felt as if I were a part of the IEP team, working towards all of their achievements. I am proud to have assisted with my daughters’ process in becoming…

Special education is defined as “specially designed instruction that meets the unusual needs of an exceptional student” according to Hallahan, D., Kauffman, J., and Pullen, P. (2012). The student that I chose to interview is currently age 25 and completed her special education program at the age of twenty-one. Due to the fact that the student was diagnosed as being mentally retarded at an early age, the mother was interviewed along with the student. In the state of Mississippi special education students are allowed to stay in school under the Exceptional Education Program until the age of twenty-one.…
