Trials Come to Make Us Stronger In my Strategies for Success class, my instructor showed us, J.K. ROWLING’S, author of the best-selling Harry Potter book series, Commencement Address, “The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination,” at the Annual Meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association. Her commencement address was very moving to me. One reader commented that “she masters the skill of communication being “autobiographical” in her presentation, making use of humor, self criticism, and humbleness. Ms. Rowling’s speech deals with various issues, not only with enriching effect of failing, rebuilding and restarting, but also with imagining other realities and people’s lives. She stresses the responsibility of those who have the power of knowledge, strength and imagination to make this a better world. When I was younger, I pictured myself traveling the world and having all the money I could ever dream of. I never stop to think about where I was going to get the money from. I just knew I was going to be rich. But as I got older, I realized money does not grow on trees, and that I have to work for whatever I want out of life. I began to see life a lot differently. In life you will have many ups and downs. Life is difficult, it can be complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive. Failure will come but when it does, you got to know how to pick yourself back up. Nothing in life worth having comes easy. Once you have failed at something, you will have to work on rebuilding what you have lost. When I was younger, I attended college for a year before I got married. I had all intentions on completing my education, traveling the world with my husband in the military, but life had other plans for me. I became pregnant soon after my husband and I got married, and three years after we was married, my husband had to get out

of the military due to medical reasons. We end up moving back to our home
