Transformers
Ques-1: What is a transformer and how does it work?
Ans: A transformer is an electrical apparatus designed to convert alternating current from one voltage to another. It can be designed to “step up” or “step down” voltages and works on the magnetic induction principle. A transformer has no moving parts and is a completely static solid state device, which insures, under normal operating conditions, a long and trouble-free life. Construction of transformer is very simple, two or more coils of insulated wire wound on a laminated steel or iron core. When voltage is introduced to one coil, called the primary winding, it magnetizes the iron core. A voltage is then induced in the other coil, called the secondary winding or output coil. The change of voltage (or voltage ratio) between the primary and secondary depends on the turns ratio of the two coils.

Ques-2: What are taps and when are they used?
Ans: Taps are provided on some transformers on the high voltage winding to correct for high or low voltage conditions, and still deliver full rated output voltages at the secondary terminals. Standard tap arrangements are at two-and-one-half and five percent of the rated primary voltage for both high and low voltage conditions.
For example: if the transformer has a 480 volt primary and the available line voltage is running at 504 volts, the primary should be connected to the 5% tap above normal in order that the secondary voltage be maintained at the proper rating.

Ques-3: What is the difference between “Insulating”, “Isolating” and “Shielded Winding” transformers?
Ans: Insulating and isolating transformers are identical. These terms are used to describe the isolation of the primary and secondary windings, or insulation between the two. A shielded transformer is designed with a metallic shield between the primary and secondary windings to attenuate transient noise. This is especially important in critical applications such as computers, process controllers and many

Death Troopers is a Star Wars novel written by Joe Schreiber.[1] Schreiber's idea was to create a horror story in the Star Wars universe that pulled from horror movies he enjoyed such as The Shining and Alien. The novel is the first horror story based in the Star Wars Universe since the Galaxy of Fear series, released in the late 90s.[2] Released on October 13, 2009, Death Troopers is set just before the events shown in A New Hope. It will be heavily featured in the MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies with SOE confirming a full page of information and advertisements of the game in the book.[3] On September 22, 2010, Ballantine Books revealed the cover of the prequel novel, also by Schreiber, called Red Harvest.…

Approximately 3 0 % of the 132 kV grid transformers in the UK are over 40 years old. Some 8 0 % are over 20 years old. To date, performance has been satisfactory with negligible occurrence of serious failure. However, transformer loads are increasing and reserved capacities are decreasing. Consequently, it is imperative to have some simple and practical means of assessing the insulation integrity of high voltage power transformers. Historically, diagnostic tests include dc resistance and ac dielectric loss of the winding insulation. The electric strength and moisture content of the oil are also measured. When a fault occurs samples of oil are sent to a laboratory for dissolved gas analysis (DGA). This technique is effective in identifying fault characteristics from the measurement of concentrations of hydrogen, hydro-carbon and carbon oxide gases (1). It is also possible to define the type of fault by means of gas ratio codes (2). The three gas ratios, acetylene/ethylene (discharge fault), ethylene/ethane (high temperature thermal fault) and methane/hydrogen (low temperature thermal fault) have been very useful parameters in determining the cause of fault…
