Literature pertaining to entrepreneurial women is very limited. There are numerous books that depict the lives of wage-earning women in Canada; however works on self-employed women are uncommon. The Business of Women- Marriage, Family, and Entrepreneurship in British Columbia, 1901-1951, was written by Melanie Buddle in 2010, under UBC Press. In The Business of Women, Buddle attempts to highlight the key features of entrepreneurial women in the 1900’s in Western Canada, exploring how and why women entered the business world. In this book, Buddle examines case studies and primary documents in order to expose the world of female entrepreneurs. Buddle focuses on issues of gender and class relations that influenced the ability of women to become self-employed. Although the information presented in this book represent the period of 1901 to 1951, I will attempt to draw connections, through the use of a summary and analysis, between the materials presented in this book to 21st century businesswomen.…

After several years of studying and then working to gain experience, women tend to prefer first being successful in their job and build a career and delay parenthood until they are a older (Wilkie, 1981). A study from the New York Post showed that about 43 % of women with higher education between 33 and 46 are without children (Walker, 2011) as they try to postpone this chapter of life until they find the right time for it. Christy Jones was also an upcoming young entrepreneur who was always looking for a new opportunity. After her undergrad studies she established a start-up company at the Nasdaq and was then looking for a new challenge. As going back to HBS seemed interesting Jones had to face the fact that she would be very busy then next few years and that there wasn’t time to start a family. As women in their twenties are the most fertile (Lobo, 2005), and as Jones was in exact this situation as many young professional women, she saw the opportunity of freezing women’s eggs while they are at their best quality. With combining her business skills and the opportunity to work closely with experts in different fields of HBS, Jones took the chance and wrote a business plan for her idea. Not seeing a problem, but an opportunity made it happen to create this business idea. With having a well-selected team and clear goals this was a great chance to start a new business. However, goals might change during a journey and an entrepreneur should always be open and observantly for new or additional opportunities.…

Dechant and Lamky offer valuable information regarding women starting small businesses in the Middle East and the issues they face and must overcome to be successful. This study is incredibly useful as it sheds light on the current pre-disposition of women (and the advancements taking place) in the Middle East and the current situation of women entrepreneurs in this area. Some drawbacks to this study were that it only investigates 10 Arab women entrepreneurs in Bahrain and Oman. Some studies have been conducted on female entrepreneurs in developing and transition economies in other parts of the world; scant attention has been paid to those in Arab countries which is what I believe motivated this particular study.…
