In the novel The Wednesday Wars, by Gary D. Schmit, the chapter “January” both ends and begins with the whole student body smiling at Holling the protagonist. These two situations are different because at the beginning of the chapter Holling is being mocked, and criticized because he wore bright yellow tights in the local production of “The Tempest”. Doug Sweiticks brother taped posters all through the halls of Camillo Junior High. At the end of the chapter Holling saved his sister from a bus sliding on the icy roads. When he got to school the next day someone had taped pictures up and down the hallways of the local hero holling Hoodhood souring across the intersection.…

“True courage is when you’re really scared but you still do it.” (Pg. 256). Ellie Linton, the protagonist and narrator of the book ‘Tomorrow When The War Began’ is a typical farm girl who from one day lived the ordinary rural life of an Aussie teenager and the next week transformed into a brave, headstrong soldier. It is better to have original and authentic ideas, rather than to mirror someone else and hide in their shadow of greatness. Ideas can come from anywhere, they can be about anything and the ideas of The Wednesday Wars is the concept of architecture. Architectural plans in the novel are made for the new school and are treated like an ancient treasure locked away, too important for anyone to see and Mr. Hoodhood makes sure the plans stay in secrecy. But when Mr. Hoodhood’s son, Holling unlocks the treasure and reveals the futuristic blueprints of his father to his friend, who happens to be the daughter of competing architect, Mr. Kowalski. His plans then spread like gooey peanut butter on warm toast and Mr. Kowalski inserts these plans into…

My third and final point is when Ellie blows up the lawn mower. After doing so she starts to question herself throughout the book and cannot make clear decisions because of this. She keeps asking herself the question ' am I an evil person.' Her friend tell her that she had to do it or her friends may have been killed and that makes her wonder 'is evil a human invention.' If this was the animal kingdom and she was a lioness and a hyena was trying to eat her cubs there is no doubt that the lioness would fight the hyena. That again would not be evil in reality, in reality that would be…

An important action of Ellie was when she blows up a lawnmower and kills three soldiers in order to escape from Mrs Alexander’s garden, which shows the theme of courage, because even though she was reluctant to, Ellie was forced herself to kill them to ensure her and her friend’s safety. The theme of survival is also presented when Ellie think back to when she killed the soldiers – “Had I killed out of love of my friends, as part of a noble crusade to rescue friends and family and keep our land free? Or had I killed because I valued my life above that of others?” Ellie learns that is they were to survive this war, they would have to do anything it takes - even if it meant having to kill soldiers. Loyalty is a theme that is prevalent throughout all the characters in the novel, but Ellie in particular shows this theme the most. Ellie presents this theme by not abandoning Robyn and Lee when they didn’t show up at the allocated place they were meant to meet up at. Although they had to leave first, Ellie still went back to find them. The ways these themes are presented by Ellie are interesting because it shows many aspects of Ellie’s character and personality at the same…
