Tommy Castelli's Awakening: A Short Story
One day, Tommy Castelli saw a old woman running out of one of the local supermarket with bread stuffed in her bag. The thin woman had a ruddy and sallow oval face and glared at him. Her skin was wrinkled and she looked old and sick. Her hair was all messed up. The salesman ran out of the shop and screamed ‘You thief, give me my bread back’. She reminded him of himself before he was married, when he stole to survive. He then had a sudden thought about the girl that stole candy from his candy store. He recalled the memory of his happy times with uncle bob. He remembered when uncle bob took him alone out of all his children crabbing and when the cops made them throw back the crab because it was 10 inches and not 9. He recalled themselves laughing …show more content…
But he chose to hide this from Tommy Castelli and ran to the supermarket, the same one that the old woman stole from, and fortunately escaped but the police randomly came up to him and asked him for the bill. He ran for his life, trying to escape from jail, but he fell as he was quite old. The police took him in and he was given 3 months of jail. It wasn’t that bad but when he returned he had changed completely. He was now an honest man who never stole anything or was involved in criminal actions. When he came back uncle dom had come back, Tommy gave him a surprise and took him out for dinner. This was a big deal for them because they were very poor. While eating dinner, dom asked tommy ‘Where did you get all this money from’. ‘I stole it’, said tommy with ease assuming that dom was fine with it. Dom started screaming and ran out of the restaurant. Dom remembers that he said something like live on your own and never returned. Tommy felt horrible about what he had done and never forgave himself, and still doesn’t today. He also had a feeling that dom was no longer alive and if he was he wouldn’t remember him because he was very, very

The father thinks back to Della’s funeral and seeing how sad Eric was crying against the doorway. Eric was seen as gentle and understanding to his father who was tumbling over his words. When the father brings up a childhood story about the mother, Eric is “wary” and “twitches” up, and tensions builds when Eric wants to know when it was said and the father “‘can’t remember’” (33, 37). The father desperately wants to remember Della by telling Eric a story of how she fell asleep as a child. When her name is mentioned, it is like ripping up a band-aid to Eric, and he gets annoyed with his father for bringing up a painful memory that he is trying to let go of. The fact that the father can’t be remember when Della told him the story adds to Eric’s annoyance when he lets out a yawn. In the next paragraph, the father expresses his fear of losing his memories of his wife which shows why he wants to continue to talk about her as Eric is trying to do the opposite and forget. When Eric remembered the story of the “spark,” it “surprised” his father because it was the first time that he had talked about something involving Della in “weeks” (43, 44). Eric brings up a story about when he was little and the family was watching a fireworks show; and a…

With confusion, Issac looked at this strange guy and said, ”Who are you? I have never met you.” “Don’t be nervous, little girl.” he said, ”You see, I’m just a poor guy, wandering in this area. Though looking frightening in these ragged clothes, I won’t hurt you.” ”Then what do you want to do?” asked Isaac, ”Mom told me not to talk to a stranger, especially those who look unkind just like you.” “Oh, lovely girl, I’m not that sort of person. I simply beg for something to eat. I’ve been hungry for several days. The persons I asked before were all unwilling to do me a favour. The third girl is the girl he really notices, she 's given the name Queenie because she was so obviously the leader of the three and the most attractive, for that reason he wanted her. Its the “want” that makes Sammy make a fool out of himself and gives him that little bit of courage to attempt to impress Queenie. The poem An Angel for Bob by Richard Stevenson is a poem about two men working at a store one training the other to stock shelves and the product falls off the shelves causing one of the men to have a melt down and quit his job leaving the store. Those events work together to prove that in unfamiliar situations it is often hard to understand what acquaintances are going through in their personal lives, but through their actions we can sympathise and come to terms with their behaviours. In this essay I will discuss how Bob and the speaker do not know each other very well, and how it is hard for the speaker to relate to Bobs problems in life along with what the Jello packets symbolize in the context of the poem and the…

In the 19th century, Sigmund Freud created a popular new method of psychological analysis, appropriately titled "psychoanalysis." Dealing primarily with subconscious impulses and desires, this popular method of evaluation soon spread beyond the realm of science and in to the literary world. In reading The Awakening by Kate Chopin, psychoanalysis introduces a significant revelation in regards to the novel's main characters. Using a Freudian analysis, the reader can see how both male and female characters exhibit subconscious signs of sexual repression and, in the more extreme cases, displacement of sexual passions and energy. When broken down, these characters can be divided into three categories: the decadent, the displaced, and the transitory.…

    Pobby And Dingan POV

    • 1433 Words

Ben Rice 's first novel, Pobby and Dingan, is a short but poignant story about the Williamson 's and their struggles in the small, opal-mining town of Lightning Ridge, Australia. Each Williamson has his or her own struggles living in Lightning Ridge, such as Kellyanne, the younger daughter, who has conjured up real yet “imaginary” friends because she doesn 't have any people her age, as well as the father, Rex, who has not yet once encountered opal in two years of mining, and the son, Ashmol, who can 't believe that everyone can see Pobby and Dingan. All of these characters learn to get past their struggles, all except one. Old Sid, the oldest opal miner in Lightning Ridge, is one major character in Rice 's novel that hasn 't really overcome his struggle, and needs some polishing to do so. In my point of view piece, I will be looking into Old Sid ' past in his shoes, explaining how he used to be before his wife died as well as explaining why he is so adamant towards believing that Rex is a ratter. My scene will take place when Judge McNulty asked Old Sid about his family, which will bring in a flashback into Old Sid 's past with his wife and end up with Old Sid explaining why he believes Rex is a ratter. This will help conclude a very interesting and unfinished dimension of Old Sid with dialogue from Old Sid during the trial in the view of Ashmol being told the story from his mother. The author, Ben Rice has given a very cantankerous personality to the character of Old Sid, but with my added point of view, the reader will be much more understanding towards Old Sid and will have a more complete answer to Judge McNulty 's query.…

This short story materializes initially through an introduction describing an occurrence in a classic English pub of a young fellow who decided to drop his cigarette-end into a waste-paper basket, despite the affluence of available ashtrays around. However, it soon becomes apparent that this happening serves only as a prologue and a link to the real story that is to follow. One of the clients, Mr. Mulliner takes the opportunity to tell the other individuals present, some only known to the reader by their drinks, about an account of his nephew: the poet Mordred Mulliner. Mordred had been on a regular visit to his dentist, as he meticulously does every six months, when a lady called Annabelle Sprocket-Sprocket entered while he was reading in the waiting-room. She was exceptionally beautiful and as such Mordred was enthralled by her mere presence. He was in love. He offered to give up his place to her, so that she may be able to continue her short visit in London of window-shopping. She had informed him that she stayed in the country and she only had a couple of hours each six months to do so. In his disappointment he lit a cigarette and as she returned to the waiting-room, he mistakenly dropped his cigarette-end into the waste-paper basket. Annabelle cried in alarm and he picked the end up again, explaining that in his inattentiveness he previously had actually set two flats on fire through this idiotic act. Mordred was disappointed when he realised he would in all probability never see Annabelle again, however he could not help being overjoyed when he received a letter from Annabelle's mother inviting him over for the weekend on the account of his kindness to her daughter at the dentist. To Mordred and the reader, the only reasonable explanation is that Annabelle had asked for his address on her way out from the dentist.…
