Tom Robinson Trial Report
Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, I stand before you as a person, defending a person. A person that I believe to be innocent. Tom Robinson would pass Mayella Ewells house on his way to the fields everyday, to help her out with things around the house. This dose not make him guilty. Tom is a good man. He would never hurt a fly. In fact his owner made a statement that "hes never caused a speck of trouble." My first point of evidence has to do with DNA and blood. Tom Robinson has type AB blood, which was not found at the scene. Mr. Ewell has type O blood, which was found on Maylella's dress. Mayella Has Type B blood, which was found on Mr. Ewells overalls. This indicates that Tom's blood was nowhere to be found at the scene. If he had raped her, there would be a struggle, in which case, Toms blood should be there. …show more content…
Toms hair is very short and would be difficult to pull out. There was no short hairs of Toms Hair color found. There were medium size hairs that were brown, consistent with Mr.Ewell, found at the scene. There were a lot of long brown hairs found at the scene and on Mr.Ewell's overalls. My next type of evidence is fingerprinting. Tom has a whorl fingerprint. The only places where Toms fingerprints were, were on the door, and the chair he knocked over when Mayella tried to kiss him. If there had been a struggle with Tom, his fingerprints would be all over places. My next evidence is handwriting. There was a note at the scene that said "ill rape your wife if you don't pay me 100,000 dollars." Signed Tom Robinson. This was written left handed. Toms left arm was caught in a cotton gin when he was 12. He cant use it for anything. Mayella claimed that there was two bruise marks in the shape of ands on her neck. If Tom had did this, there would only be one, because of his arm

Today a trial took place at the small court in Maycomb County, Alabama. A nineteen-and-a-half year old white woman named Mayella Ewell and her father filed a rape charge against a maimed black man.The courtroom was packed to the brim with white and black viewers. The judge, Mr. Taylor, was draped lazily across his chair, looking very well asleep, as the prosecutor drilled first Mr. Tate, the local sheriff, then Mr. Ewell, and finally Mayella. According to the witnesses, the girl asked for Tom Robinson’s help to “bust up a chiffarobe” and when she turned to give him a nickel he sprang on her and beat her and took advantage of her. Mr. Ewell heard her screaming from a nearby field and “came runnin’ fast as I could” and tried to catch Robinson…

Would evidence have been used in Tom’s case? According to a case dealing with an African American, no it wouldn’t. No one seemed to take into consideration that the man “didn’t match the victim’s description of [her rapist],”(INNOCENT MAN’S EIGHT YEAR PRISON ORDEAL). But this evidence didn’t seem to matter, as they were convinced the man had committed the crime. Yet another case when the victim didn’t identify the man as the criminal. A man “Josh Ryen, attacked by three Caucasian or Latino man [had attacked and robbed him], not one African American [like the one that had been convicted of the crime]” (Wooten). The trail should have waited until Ryen's testimony could be heard. Even after Ryen's statement on who the real criminals were evidence…

The Scottsboro Case is known to many. It is a significant case involving racism, lynching, segregation, and the Jim Crow laws. The case started on March 25, 1931, when two white women accused nine black men of rape while on a train headed to Jackson County, Alabama. The trial lasted years and ended with an unconstitutional verdict of guilty against the defendants. “Scottsboro captured South’s racism and the disturbance of the Great Depression.” (Scottsboro Trials). The Scottsboro Trials and Tom Robinson’s trial in the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee have many similarities. With the similarities there are differences too. The stories that the people involved tell is one. In the case…

I tend to my garden as I watch several cars drive along my street back to their homes. Tom Robinson’s trial must be over. Before the trial even started, I predicted that the verdict would be guilty. When I saw Jem, Scout, and Dill arrive back at their house with long faces, my prediction was confirmed. It is still upsetting for me to hear that another innocent black man’s life was ruined because of the way white people treat them. I did not attend the trial; I do not wish to see an innocent person on trial for their life. I take off my gardening gloves and head inside. As I wash my hands, I see the children looking very upset and confused. I decide to make them chocolate cakes to help to cheer them up. They must be extremely confused and disappointed about the verdict of the trial. They are too young to completely understand our unfair society.…

Bob Ewell also was proven to be left-handed, and Mayella’s assailant was likely left handed. The descriptions of the Ewell children’s home life and the fact that Bob Ewell was left handed made his credibility as a witness to be questioned. The second reason for why I believe that Tom will be found innocent is that there is no substantial evidence. Tom would’ve had a very difficult job of committing this crime because his left arm is of no use. In the book, Scout says that his left arm is 12 inches shorter than his right arm. When being sworn in Tom has to pick up his left arm and place it on the bible. This shows how his left arm is inoperative. Reverend Sykes said that Tom had got his arm caught in a cotton gin when he was younger. The cotton gin wrenched the muscle from bone, leaving his arm immobile. Also, Tom’s testimony and the Ewell’s testimonies contradict themselves in nearly every way. In Tom’s testimony, he says that he was in the house because Mayella invited him in to help with small chores. Mayella said that Tom forced his way inside, with the intent to rape her. Tom said that he had no intent of assaulting…

My father looked at all the information carefully and brought up very true points! I know this, I do! He said we can’t give up even if we know we will lose, but would we have found ourselves in court in the first place trying to prove Tom’s innocence if he had been white? I don’t think it would have been necessary, but my father is a fighter and I know he had hope we would prove Tom’s side of the story to be true, but I think in the back of his head he knew people’s blindness to see a person for anything other than their skin would stop him from wining the…

The three characters I’m going to write about in much detail are Atticus Finch, Jem Finch and Scout Finch. Although these three are from the same family each one has their own take on the enfolding of the court case and go through a completely different set of emotions.…

Maycomb Toms Trial August 26 1935 The sentence on Tom Robinson's trial has been stated today. For those of you who are just learning about the case: Tom Robinson, a young black man, is accused of rape by Mayella Ewell, a 19 year old girl. The trial began with Judge Taylor's presiding and then Heck Tate,1st officer of the county, began by testifying. He began with saying that on November 21 Bob Ewell, father of victim and 7 other children, came to him claiming Mayella had been raped by Mr. Robinson. He continued with saying how him and Mr. Ewell had went to the Ewell household where Miss Ewell was lying on the floor and looked beat down. He asked her who did it and she claimed Mr. Robinson was responsible for her rape and of her ill state. Atticus Finch ,father of two, is a well respected lawyer who was representing Mr. Robinson. Mr. Finch made a surprisingly astonishing case for Mr. Robinson however the case could not change the color of his skin which in this time in age concludes many cases of this sort. Atticus asked very frequently if and why Mr. Tate and Mr. Ewell did not call for a doctor to examine his child, to which Mr. Tate answered,"Well I can tell you why I didn't. It was necessary, Mr. Tate. She was mighty banged up. Something sho' happened, it was obvious." Next to the stand was Bob Ewell who answered Mr. Gilmer, social solicitor, questions in a very bold manner and explained that he heard Mayella screaming while he was kindling. He ran to the house and looked through the window to see Mr. Robinson on top of his daughter. Mr. Ewell resumed with saying he couldn't go after Mr. Robinson since he was concerned for his daughter. He said he went after Mr. Tate and brought him to his home. Mr. Finch began his cross-examination and Mr. Ewell seemed very careful to answer the question. They talked about the injuries Miss Ewell had and Atticus asked the simple question can you read and write which soon build up tension in the hot room.…
